For the longest time, I really held out for the idea that my employers had a conscience and would ultimately realise this is a racist + discriminatory directive - and that they would do the right thing (seems like a common theme from watching @anisaysbackup recent video about her experience). Sadly, their emails from the SAR demonstrate that they were never going to..

Lara Sheehi is a Lebanese-American psychoanalyst. In her latest book, she demonstrates how the field of psychoanalysis has long been, and continues to be, weaponised in the service of empire. The war against our interiority is waged constantly & our psychic terrain is a permanently contested space that the powers that be continually seek to occupy. Sheehi then sets out to ‘repurpose’ the tools of the field and put them to work in the service of liberation: to foster groundedness and connection in place of the “atomisation” & disconnection from social reality that Western psychology has deliberately encouraged.

Sheehi’s analysis makes you feel *sane* in a system that deliberately targets your psyche with what she calls “psychic intrusions.” These intrusions work to *demobilise* you, leaving you feeling insane, confused, scared, and exhausted. A clear contemporary example is @macklemore being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour for saying “Free Palestine.” This is a large-scale psychic intrusion, an international signal that embeds itself in people’s minds: you are not to speak about Palestine or call for an end to the g**ocide lest you be smeared as a racist or lose your job. When you remain connected to material reality as you see the images coming out of Gaza, the silencing feels *insane* & illogical.

Sheehi also explains that when broader tactics (biased media coverage, gaslighting, “lexical warfare,” etc) fail to work on people who are “less susceptible”, the system turns to “force multipliers.” It targets individuals specifically and relentlessly in order to more pointedly demobilise them and make examples of them through job losses, cancelled opportunities, lawsuits, and the like. On a personal & individual level, this is what Macklemore is experiencing.

The difficult part is that many in our own families & communities regurgitate these psychic intrusions. When I wanted to challenge my former employer for banning the Palestine pin, most people told me to let it go, keep my head down, finish my training, and concede to the racism. This is how psychic intrusions work - people internalise messaging from the media & become afrai by @tamara_34
