POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I’m proud to tell stories that are rooted in culture, identity, history, and heart.

These two books are different, each with remarkable journeys that continue to connect with readers across cultures, generations, and experiences.

I am forever grateful that these stories continue to reach the readers they were meant for. Most of all, I hope every reader feels seen, inspired, and reminded that their story matters too❤️

Afróntalo

“One in four Latin Americans has African ancestry, and yet, there is a general deficit of knowledge regarding the presence and prevalence of Blackness throughout the Americas. This is more than a simple matter of obscurity. It is a problem of erasure, invisibility, and dislocation. Afróntalo introduces you to four communities in Mexico and twenty-one Californias, all in their own words, to explore the depth and breadth of Afrolatine histories, cultures, and identities.”

In the summer of 2022, when I received an email from Dr. Arianna Huhn, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology at Cal State University, San Bernardino, asking if I’d like to be a part of an upcoming AfroLatine exhibit, I had no idea what the result would be or how exciting it would be to share my story growing up Black Panamanian, in California.

Today, I was in awe when I visited the exhibit on Cal State San Bernardino’s campus. This little video here does NOT do it justice. I am so honored to be a part of this❤️

Special Thank You to @junniornavarro for creating this incredible image of me and incorporating mi cultura🇵🇦by putting me in a Mola print shirt!

*The exhibit is open until June 2024*

Just sharing ~ As a plotter, these are a few of the books I find myself always running back to whenever I start drafting a new story. I highly recommend!

📚SAVE THE CAT ~ comprehensive story-structure guide for novelists revealing the 15 “beats” (plot points) that comprise a successful story—from the opening image to the finale.
@savethecat

📚THE PLOT WHISPERER ~ helps novelists develop multiple scenes and plots, create the structure of their stories, and explains plot concepts and more.
@marthasalderson

📚The Thesaurus Series ~inspiration for creating characters’ emotional responses that are personalized.

A full-circle moment I’ll never forget. ✨🇵🇦

It was an absolute honor to share my book SINCERELY SICILY with the legendary Panamanian music artist Renato — a true pioneer whose impact on music and culture continues to be felt around the world.

I wrote about Renato in my book because his story is part of the rich history of Panamá and the powerful legacy of Afro-Panamanian creativity. His contributions helped lay the foundation for the sounds that would eventually influence the rise of reggaetón music we know today.

As a an author of Panamanian descent, moments like this remind me why preserving our stories matters. Our history, our music, and our people deserve to be celebrated. 🇵🇦❤️

Thank you, Renato, for your artistry, your legacy, and for inspiring generations. by @tameeksb

Art that tells stories. Art that honors legacy. Art that makes you stop and feel. ✨

GIANTS celebrates the creativity, resilience, and brilliance of Black artists while reminding us of the power of preserving our stories, our history, and our voices. 🎨🖤✊🏾 taken in Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego by @tameeksb

Last week myself and 11 other authors made the long trek to Kirksville, MO for the Children’s Literature Festival. We shared our stories with about 1400 4-6th grade students.

I also got to reconnect with my fellow 2023 debut authors @meden_author & @hmcwrites!

Beyond grateful to see DANILO WAS HERE included on this list.

Writing this book (on deadline) was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a long time. Not to mention all the self-doubt I dealt with while wondering if this book would be any good, or live up how I feel about my first release, SINCERELY SICILY📚

Needless to say, DANILO WAS HERE has superseded my wildest dreams for it & I’m excited for what’s to come!

Thank you @kirkus_reviews + @harpercollins + @harperalley + my editor, Carolina Ortiz + EVERYONE WHO HAS READ & CHAMPIONED MY WORK❤️ by @tameeksb
