Game Design exceptionalism is an issue I've experienced in my entire career - a premise that there are special requirements to be a Game Designer.

Entry LVL, as an organization, provided me an incredible opportunity to talk to juniors and aspiring game developers and outline to them that everyone has the capacity to be a game designer. If a child can make games, you can too!

Part 3 of 3.

The gaming caste system is an underdiscussed part of the socioeconomic engagement of players in relation to games. What we're seeing right now are players, contingent on spending power, engaging in games through different means with no real avenues to be able to bridge the divide between different subgroups.

We've had methods to tackle these issues - where ownership wasn't as mandatory to be a part of the equation - but a lot of these methods no longer exist (e.g., renting games, borrowing a game from a friend). So instead, we'll simply see distinctions where players will engage with what they can afford - and that compartmentalizes the audiences into select subgroups.

So - what now?

I highly doubt that the person who handed me a Japanese Clefairy expected me to feel the way that I do about receiving it. But it means the world to me.

I'm honestly incredibly happy today, and it's all from a guy deciding to do a thing on a whim.

What ultimately is the price of play?

As prices are skyrocketing across the board, at a certain point, you need to ask yourself the question.

Are games for you and me?

The answer to that - as an insider - is generally, no. They're for who can afford it. And the industry perception is becoming more and more problematic by the day.

As we lose our shared culture of games, what ultimately will occur?

Part 2 of 3,

The fact of the matter is that the Gaming Industry is only recently expanding into a diverse audience. Using leadership as a point of reference, the skeletons are still there. When consumer spending power drops to this extent, what occurs?

A less diverse representation of developers & games tailored for the top 20%.

Part of a new initiative I want to do is creating informative content specifically around Game Design and tying it into socioeconomics and other, similar initiatives. I've worked in the industry for 10+ years with a focus on designing incentives and specializing in monetization. Let's chat!

This is Part 1 of The Price of Play, a short series on games, money, and access.

The short version: real incomes went up, but most people are spending less. Meanwhile, consoles jumped ~30% in price. Gaming has swung between open and closed access before. Right now, the door is closing.

Parts 2 and 3 cover who gets left out and what we can actually do about it.

Has the price of gaming changed how you play?

Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, Real Median Household Income (MEHOINUSA672N); BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey, 2013 & 2024 (real 2024 dollars).

I'm really thankful for September.

It was important for my character to recognize that I am not guaranteed a positive outcome even if I'm striving to do good things through my actions. It was important because even giving support to people when they're in need provides no guarantee of reciprocation - and that if I want to help others, I need to do it with the expectation that it'll likely never come back around. It was also important because it brought me the realization that some friendships are finite, and others are consistent. And that I should love the people who stick around all the more, rather than grieve the people who leave.

This month, I focused on mental health, healing, mentorship of others, and not allowing other people's hatred impede my ability to give back. This month, I feared that I'd give up volunteering - and that I'd not keep my mental health together anymore. Instead, I rejected that notion and decided that I'll put 110% of my heart into my work instead.

I honestly don't feel anything negative - and have opted to just engage in kindness and love. by @tamerbourine

August is my birthday month, and my birthday months have always been the ones where I feel the most uncertainty. I feel like I always think of it in my head as turning to the next chapter of my life, and that means I need to reflect upon the last chapter of my life and figure out if I'm moving forward.

Because of that, this month had moments of weakness - where I feel like I watched as opportunities started to fall through, where I felt lonelier than usual, where I struggled to keep the positive mental at the velocity that I've had for the last few months.

Part of me still felt, though, that I should keep my chin up and keep trying my best. It ended up being really important, where I watched as my actions and words were able to at least manifest a little brightness in other people's lives - and came back to me to make me feel like there's a tomorrow to aspire for too.

I'm 31 years old - and I'm proud of who I am today. I'm 31 years old - and next month is a new chapter. I'll run into ups and downs tomorrow, but I'm happy that I'm able to have some agency over the reins of my future.

And honestly, with me driving, the future looks just a little bit bright. by @tamerbourine

This month has been a lot of confronting fears & continuing to take steps forward.

The fear of rejection & loss. A continued anxiety around losing friends that I care deeply.

The fear of rejection towards my sense of self. That inevitable judgment when I engage in my expression of self.

The fear of the unknown & tomorrow. That anxiety and uncertainty that exists in the current world ecosystem where employment is uncertain & there's no familial nor obvious mental support.

The fear of loneliness. Going to events & experiencing things that I used to experience with friends & people I cared about - but doing it by myself really doesn't hit the same.

I've started journaling a lot & I like to reflect on the lessons I've learned through the people I've talked to & my experiences. And candidly, this month was a weird challenge.

July has revolved around rejecting those fears & anxieties - and being bold. This month, through my experiences in ASGC & @proudasianmen, I've felt really strongly about wanting to put out more love into the world. I've felt really strongly about wanting to be more positive - and wanting to try to make a little bit of a difference where I can. Little by little, moment by moment, every little smile & laugh compounds - and it feels like the impact there is more meaningful than most of the things I've done in my life so far.

I'm a continued work in progress - but what I can take a lot of pride in is knowing that who I am today is leaps and bounds better than who I was yesterday. And who I will be tomorrow will be better than who I am today.

I really can't overstate the level of gratitude I have for everyone who's been a part of the journey recently. But I also really need to express my gratitude to the people who had to suffer through me depression. It truly does mean a lot - and even if not all of you are in my life anymore, I just want you to know that you really made a difference. ❤️ by @tamerbourine

Hellish. Tumultuous. Torture.

Those words could describe this month as I put in countless hours every week, trying to keep my project afloat, while seeing the writing on the wall day by day. I felt undervalued, unloved, and disrespected as I tried my best for my friends who I wanted to be able to continue working with.

Those words don't really describe what this month actually made me feel.

Hope, self-compassion, love, happiness, joy, expression, emotion, vulnerability.

Earlier this month, I came out as non-binary. I learned that it was time to finally be unapologetically and unabashedly myself, rather than lying to myself and others - and not representing my authentic, true self. Part of that equation meant expression - and expressing my identity of non-conforming as I took my first steps into engaging with femininity and pushing against what I perceived as the traditional hegemony.

It's made this month weird. On one hand, I feel an immense sense of pride and love for myself - on the other hand, I feel such a high level of heartbreak as I watched how difficult this month was for myself and my peers as we struggled through our challenges.

Despite that, I lived. I'm here. I've stayed true to who I am and have pushed back against people who have tried to shut me down this month. It's really been a joy.

I've loved more this month - I've cried more this month - I've felt more this month - I've laughed more this month. I feel like I'm finally connecting to who I want to be and who I am. As my therapist says, "your true sense of self".

I knew that I was making the right decision when I was wishing one of my closest friends a happy pride day - someone who I lived with for years - and I shared pictures to her of a few of my "fits".

And she said "I've never seen you this happy."

Happy Pride & thank you so much for joining me on this journey to heal. by @tamerbourine
