Part of a new initiative I want to do is creating informative content specifically around Game Design and tying it into socioeconomics and other, similar initiatives. I've worked in the industry for 10+ years with a focus on designing incentives and specializing in monetization. Let's chat!

This is Part 1 of The Price of Play, a short series on games, money, and access.

The short version: real incomes went up, but most people are spending less. Meanwhile, consoles jumped ~30% in price. Gaming has swung between open and closed access before. Right now, the door is closing.

Parts 2 and 3 cover who gets left out and what we can actually do about it.

Has the price of gaming changed how you play?

Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, Real Median Household Income (MEHOINUSA672N); BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey, 2013 & 2024 (real 2024 dollars).

Especially for generation-defining games like GTA VI where playing the game becomes important socially, and the initial hype on release is where the most excitement is
