Fantastic talk by Christiane Seufferlein @bertasflachs @gressenhall_fw @theflaxandfleeceproject
Connecting to communities past and present through flax fibres.

Such an interesting opportunity to hear about the social history and women’s stories behind the ‘Dowry Chests’ containing flax and linen, that were donated to Christiane, both fascinating and generous.
She Is now passing on these incredibly old and valuable materials, to makers and artists who use the textile, linen, threads and flax fibres in their own creative ways.

Everything about flax, from the social history, to the sowing, growing, processing and the production of linen is interesting!
I’m loving being part of the @theflaxandfleeceproject @gressenhall_fw learning to process flax, using old tools, and today hearing about indigo aprons that have two sides, plain for work and decorated indigo blue for best! Thinking about these women and their flax dowry chests, turning their aprons at the end of a hard days work processing flax really gave me joy! I think a reversible indigo apron may be my next project!

I came away with two lengths of 100 year old linen from Austria and a strick of golden flax fibre from Anna Maria’s (born 1912) Dowry Chest.
I will be passing these amazing materials over to my daughter @esme_curtis.lundberg who is currently immersed in a residency at Edinburgh Printmakers with Jerwood Foundation exploring flax traditions, heritage and crafts.
Feels inspiring to further invite these inter generational threads and connections!

The Albion - with its black sail is the last trade Wherry in Norfolk.
Such an interesting history, but also feels so relevant to the now. What do we value, how do we live, the pace of a day.

Craft, work, time, landscape, Norfolk.

Always wanted to get on board one of these beauties since moving to Norfolk over 25 years ago, I love Emerson’s photographs, so very excited to finally experience the reeds and rushes from her deck. I remember seeing the vast sewing table where this sail is repaired with @esme_curtis.lundberg as part of her Fine Art Printmaking BA research, so it was fantastic to finally see it moving in the wind! Especially interesting to see St Benets Abbey from the water after having walked there the previous day, varying perspectives.

Thanks to everyone involved & @eastonpottery for organising!

Circular walk from How Hill, Toad Hole Cottage on the River Ant to St Benet’s Abbey on the River Bure.
Watery landscapes, reeds and rushes, Norfolk sheds, local produce, lack of rain, eel nets, rag rugs, witch marks and bellarmines, local dialect and trades.

Materials. Time spent. Seasonality. Place

Sharing, walking, talking.. ideas percolating, absorbing, listening to the landscape, architectural palimpsest.
Visibility and Invisibility

Being held by and porous to the land and place.

NODULE - A 2-part exploratory making and firing workshop

This two day workshop offers a unique offering to explore Wolterton Hall’s 2026 Arts and Culture Programme through the lens of clay and fire with artists @ali.hewson @by.noo.ceramics @eastonpottery and @tamlinlundberg

Together we will spend a morning reflecting on the works of Phyllida Barlow and Daisy Parris in clay, and waste slip made from septarian nodules processed by Clay Research Group during material studies undertaken at Wolterton Hall in 2025.

Works made will be bisque fired and brought back for a second session of wood firing, where you will be invited to join a shift in the day of a firing.

All works will then be unpacked from the kiln after cooling, cleaned and posted to you as a record of Wolterton’s annual programme, material and community

This is an exciting opportunity to work with materials gathered from the grounds at Wolterton Hall @woltertonpark and experience a taste of the wood firing process.

Booking information is via the link in our bios and also direct through the Wolterton Hall website

We’d love to see you

'The Garden Comes Inside' continues at Bolwick Hall this weekend- contemporary ceramics, painting, print and textiles in relation to the wild and cultivated garden.

"The show is gentle, meditative, beautiful and thought provoking, providing and small escape from the world."

Open Friday to Sunday this weekend and 22-24 May, ticketed by @nnfest

Please book tickets in advance if you can but walk ins are also possible

The show was photographed last weekend by the wonderful @denisailie who has captured the beauty of the interior architecture as well as the fabulous ceramics and other contemporary artwork by artists such as:

There is an 'artists in conversation' event this Saturday but it's now sold out- I am arranging another of these events for later in the summer so watch this space...

The show will also be open 'by appointment' until the end of July. Group visits welcome, just send me a message
And the garden @bolwicknorfolk is open for the National Garden Scheme on Sunday 7 June @norfolkngs by @tamlinlundberg

Wood fired saggar stack with porcelain tests, alluvial materials and marks made from locally gathered fibres.

Am really pleased with these saggars, ongoing research into porosity to place and our environments.
I’m increasingly interested in how wild additions and materials can disrupt and interfere with outcomes.
I especially like the imperfect, the ceramic ‘wasters’ that would have been discarded.

Walking and collecting, mixing and making, accumulations and accretions.

Hands, materials and tools. Intrinsically human.

As we continue to make ‘progress’ into unimaginably complex and digital realms I cherish the motion of making, the physicality of doing and the immersive absorption of manipulating, playing and grappling with materials.

It is a daily reminder of what it means to be a physical human.

Similarly, the repetitive and meditative rhythm of walking outside and even of breathing parallels movements and rhythms of making and process.
I value the physicality of working with materials, whether that be throwing on the wheel, the steady accumulation of coiling and pressing clay, or scraping and smoothing, burnishing and polishing surfaces with much loved found stones.
I enjoy the simple action of twisting foraged fibres to make cordage, or of slowly mending a jumper elbow that will encapsulate and embody time spent.

I am interested in what carries value in currencies that aren’t always economic.

Friendship, memory, attention, play, sharing, time, caring.

The world feels like an accelerated, intensely stimulating environment, exciting but often excessively competitive, frenetic and busy!

I am always looking for ways to pause, to play, to balance and modify, looking for anchors to keep me steady and ways to live that enable healthy and reciprocal exchanges with nature, family and community.

Through movement, motion, walking, making and being present I attempt to keep my focus.

Thank you @benjones.photo for taking these beautiful images of my hands in action.

‘Corded Vessels’ will be showing in ‘The Garden Comes Inside’ @bolwicknorfolk curated by @carolinefisherprojects as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival @nnfest 2026 which runs 10-24 May and through the summer by appointment.

These pieces respond to the garden and chalk stream ‘The Mermaid’ that runs through Bolwick grounds.
The pieces are the result of an accumulative process of walking, gathering, making and memory.

Plant fibres were collected from the riverside to create cordage, chalk and alluvial sediments gathered for slips and glazes.

Cord marked ceramic vessels capture transient textile fibres in clay making them permanent and visible.
It is more relevant than ever to think carefully about what we make, the materials we use, how long they will last and our relationship to and impact on nature. Our imprint and trace.

I have been looking at Beaker and Jomon pottery, that literally means ‘rope marked’, baskets and weaving.
