Student House (Yo-talo), a building with quite a history. Originally built for the Finnish Union Bank, it once housed an impressive banking hall, a basement vault, and apartments for bank managers.

After the bank moved in 1938, the City of Tampere took over the building. In 1966, it was given to Tampere’s student unions, and the Student House officially opened in 1967. For decades, it was a lively student hub, home to student organisations, restaurants, music, dancing and even country rock performances.

Designed by architect Gustaf Nyström and completed in 1901, the building features an ornate and imaginative façade that blends Neo-Renaissance influences with early Viennese Art Nouveau. Today, it is protected for its architectural, cultural-historical, and landscape significance.

When people talk about Finland, they often mention education, innovation, and work-life balance. After a few hours in the forest near Saarijärvi, Tampere, I think one of Finland’s greatest treasures is something simpler: nature and silence.

Thanks to my Finnish friend, I learned the Finnish way of chopping wood, helped build a fire, grilled marshmallows, drank tea from Moomin mugs, and picked berries still growing in September.

For three hours, there were no emails, meetings, or endless scrolling.

Just fresh air, good company, and a quiet forest.

As someone who moved to Finland recently I’m starting to understand why Finns value their connection with nature so much.

Could you spend 3 hours in a silent forest?
