Create! Magazine has been so supportive of my work since the beginning of my international journey as an artist, and to be on the cover is such lovely icing on the cake, - a cake that includes a wonderful friendship and some fun collaborations. Tania Marmolejo,”Your Summer Friends”, 2026, Oil on linen. 49h x 78w in.
Influenced by her Scandinavian and Caribbean heritage, Tania Marmolejo studied Graphic Design and Illustration in Norway and returned to the Dominican Republic to study Fine Arts at the Altos de Chavon School of Design. In 1998, she received the Bludhorn Scholarship, and continued her studies at Parsons The New School for Design, New York, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts and Illustration in 2000.

She began her artistic career as an illustrator for the fashion and lifestyle sections of Obsidiana magazine in New York. During those years, she also designed characters and backgrounds for MTV, PBS, Hyperion / Disney and Scholastic Books among others, as part of Data Motion Arts studios, receiving various ASIFA and CINE awards.

In 2005 Tania joined the group of artists at MadArts Studios in Brooklyn, New York, where she participated in several group exhibitions. Since then, her work has been exhibited in numerous collective national and international exhibitions, representing The Dominican Republic in several Iberoamerican Art Salons in Washington DC.

Another turn around the sun for this happy girl, so grateful to the friends and companions that joined me along the way, and the exciting new ones I’ve made- and in this special place in the East that grows dearer and dearer to my heart, I’ve found more ways to be inspired when I thought I was a little lost. All these gifts are endless, ever evolving, and incredibly grand.

“En ‘Mi Naturaleza’. la naturaleza tiene un doble significado. Habla del mundo físico que me formó —el océano, los ríos y los paisajes abiertos de mi infancia—, los lugares que fueron testigos de mi crecimiento y que ayudaron a dar forma a la naturaleza misma de quien soy.
Pero mi naturaleza también pertenece a un ámbito más profundo y heredado: uno arraigado en la memoria, la mitología y la tradición espiritual del Caribe. En estas pinturas habitan figuras y símbolos tomados de la herencia taína y africana, entre ellos la Ciguapa, la mujer legendaria de pies al revés cuyas huellas engañaban a los hombres que la buscaban, y Yemayá, la Diosa del Mar, cuya presencia era invocada con frecuencia cuando pescaba en las aguas del Caribe junto a mi padre”, Tania Marmolejo

El caballo también encarna esta dualidad. En tradiciones afrocaribeñas como la santería y el vudú, la posesión espiritual forma parte de un lenguaje sagrado y ancestral. En mis pinturas de caballos, el animal nunca es solamente un animal: se convierte tanto en una presencia física como en una extensión espiritual, una encarnación de la fuerza interior, el misterio y el poder de la figura femenina.
