🍒Choosing your implants is exciting. Keeping up with your breast health afterward? Just as important. If you have breast implants, here are the top 5 things to know about mammograms.

1. Your screening schedule stays the same: Saline or silicone, implants do not lower your risk of breast cancer. Annual screening mammograms still start at age 40, unless you had a complete mastectomy that removed all natural breast tissue.

2. Expect a few extra pictures: X-rays don’t pass easily through implants, which can hide some breast tissue, especially when implants sit in front of the chest muscle. That’s why technicians use implant displacement views (the Eklund Technique), gently moving the implant back and bringing breast tissue forward. Instead of the usual 4 images, you’ll typically have 8. Think of it as a bonus photo shoot.

3. Rupture is very rare: A routine mammogram applies far less pressure than it takes to tear an implant shell. Technicians and radiologists are trained to handle implants with care.

4. Speak up before you start: Tell both the scheduler and your technologist that you have implants. Never assume they’ll catch it from a prior record. Be ready to share:
🌸Implant type (silicone or saline)
🌸Placement (above or below the muscle)
🌸Date of your augmentation
🌸Any changes you’ve noticed, like asymmetry, firmness, or shape changes

5. Keep up with monthly self-exams: Be gentle and focus on the breast tissue around the implant. Look for lumps, thickening, or skin changes, and contact your provider right away if anything seems unusual.

Your implants are an investment in you. Your mammograms are too.🎗️💗

🩷🩵As a female plastic surgeon and a mom to both a daughter and a son, the Cornell 7 story has stayed with me.

I keep thinking about what I want my children to understand about the world.

To my daughter: You deserve to be safe. You deserve to be believed. And what someone does to you is NEVER your fault.

To my son: Consent is not complicated. Protect the vulnerable. Speak up. Don’t look the other way.

And to the institutions entrusted to protect students: Protecting your reputation can never matter more than protecting a victim.

If people in positions of power ignored, minimized, concealed, or mishandled crimes, they should be held accountable.

We talk so much about raising strong daughters.

We also need to raise good sons and demand accountability from the institutions responsible for protecting them both.
