What do we mean by "anti-carceral" therapy?

Divestment from carceral systems - We do not believe in the power of any type of carceral system for rehabilitating people or solving world problems.

No involuntary treatment - We do not conduct or engage in any form of treatment without your clear and explicit consent. You can say "no" without being labeled "resistant".

No pathologizing neurodivergence - We do not support harmful narratives that view people as “deviant” or “crazy” for having a diagnosis or being neurodivergent

No punitive measures - We center methods of achieving justice that engage in restorative and transformative work instead of punishment. taken in Toronto, Canada by @tanviyenna

What do we mean by "abolitionist" therapy?

Critical lens - We approach therapy with the knowledge that macro-level social and political injustices contribute to our mental health.

Re-imagining justice systems - We acknowledge the problematic origins of policing and the “justice system” and advocate for anti-carceral approaches instead.

Re-imagining care systems - Avoiding harmful systems leaves room to create new and better ways of caring for each other (mutual aid, pod-mapping, care teams, etc.).

No mental policing - We don’t use approaches that seek to police or stifle your feelings and thoughts. As many abolitionists say, “k*** the cop in your head.” taken in Toronto, Canada by @tanviyenna

What do we mean by "inclusive" therapy?

Varied Identities

We come to this work marginalized in various ways--race, gender, ability, neurotype, sexuality, etc. And these identities show up in our work.

Informed Practice

We will make an effort to learn about your identities and understand how they impact your experiences and perspective.

We Come As We Are

We bring our whole selves to this work. We use our marginalized identities to inform our clinical practice by centering justice, equity, empathy, and relationality.

Historical Perspective

We know that the mental health and social work fields have been weaponized against vulnerable groups in the past, and we work hard to avoid reproducing that violence in our practice. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @tanviyenna

These numbers come from the “Intimate partner violence in Canada” study published in 2018 by Adam Cottrell in 2021: https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-002-x/2021001/article/00003-eng.htm

More than 1 in 10 women has experienced sexual violence in an intimate relationship and almost all of them report feeling significant emotional impacts from this experience. Yet only 3% of those people would be likely to report these incidents to law enforcement. We know that the criminal legal system is often retraumatizing and does not end with “justice” for anyone. These statistics are frustrating but not at all shocking.

Reporting is not the only path forward for survivors. Finding healing does not have to involve any carceral system or legal process. We can help you come back to yourself again.

Fidgeting and ranting are two of my favourite hobbies and today I’m ranting about how therapists need to act less weird. We are trained to be lifeless “blank slates” and it turns us into freaks, and not in a good way!#therapistsactnormalchallenge2026

Sharing my thoughts about a question I have been thinking about for 12+ years. Survivorship is needlessly policed in a world so saturated by sexual harm. What is gained from strict gatekeeping of the identity of "survivor"? I find conversations about the myriad of ways sexual violence creeps into all of our lives much more enlightening and useful in healing, recovery and prevention. We are all impacted by sexual violence just like we are all impacted by the air, water, and earth.

I've been trying to figure out how to participate in the discourse happening about the Epstein files recently. I am so overwhelmed with anger, disgust and grief that I have struggled to come to useful language. More than anything, I don't want people to feel alone. I don't want people to feel "crazy." I want people to feel protected by each other. Lean on other people. Trauma is harder to cope with in isolation and this is indeed mass traumatizing event. Reach out to your friends, loved ones, and us for support.
