Tao Lashley-Burnley (@taol_bart) returns to take over the ICA Instagram this week 👀

Presented as part of our current exhibition, Connecting Thin Black Lines 1985 – 2025, Lashley-Burnley’s digital interventions explore how both online and physical spaces enable or hinder communication.

During Covid, Tao turned to Instagram stories to stage ephemeral happenings and is interested in how people might react to them firsthand or miss them entirely ... perhaps later hearing about them from others.

Lubaina Himid has invited Tao Lashley-Burnley (@taol_bart) to take over our Instagram for Connecting Thin Black Lines 1985 – 2025, exploring how physical and digital spaces enable or hinder communication.

During Covid, Lashley-Burnley began to use Instagram stories to stage ephemeral happenings, and is interested in how people might react to them firsthand or miss them entirely ... perhaps later hearing about them from others.

Watch out for Tao’s interventions across the ICA’s Instagram between 14 – 20 July.

Wine comparison

This is the last tasteless post.
I bought two bottles of wine. One tasted thick, the other tasted thin. One was £6 the other was £18. I can’t remember which was which or what is preferable in terms of red win so go cheap and finish the bottle because it is only a question of body as wine people say. Which Evers cheapest buy that because thick or thin who cares. If you compare them remind me which is which. Tell me which one matters, I’m just sad I can taste and smell again by @taol_bart

Roast spuds, chicken and cheese wrapped in prosciutto plus sauce

Half way through cooking this yesterday I realised I could smell the spring onions. I cursed the world for taking my new work away from me. Luckily still can’t taste or smell much else. Quite elaborate considering I can’t taste but roasties feel like eating hot clouds, storm clouds the crunch sounds like thunder. Pan seared prosciutto and cheese is sort of like washing tumbling around my jaw, putting the chicken in with the prosciutto load was like putting a red sock in with a whites wash. As soon as you start you know you’ve fucked up and just have to wait till it’s over by @taol_bart

Shakshuka

Like a Thelonious Monk song. Everything everywhere but all together. Spinach remains my champion but having chillis and hot sauce kick in the back of my throat was like taking a charge from forward in basketball, you know it’s coming but that pain is satisfying. Hot sauce is quite interesting when there’s no taste it just slaps your tongue and says nothing else till it slaps it again. Is there coriander on the dish- yes, do I like it- yes, can I taste it- no, is there any need for the “oh my no iss soo soapy, ew” discussion?- no. Grow up. Poached eggs are just fun by @taol_bart

Bacon sandwich.

Soft and greasy. Some crispy bits. Memories of previous bacon butties make it a fun experience. However, quite sad it didn’t make me close my eyes and breath deeply like I do in my memories. The enjoyment is too distant and I’m just pulling bacon from my teeth and getting grease off my beard. The sounds I can hear as I chew are too prominent as well, just annoying, in my mind they used to be like lounge jazz. Tried putting some lounge jazz on in the background and it helped. Chewing is fucking tiresome by @taol_bart

Mango

Even less of a reaction from my tongue. Feels like sorbet but that could be because it’s colder. One of my nostrils is blocked so it sounds like when a tube is approaching the station but on the district line not Victoria. Feels like the drink is going up into my sinuses rather than down my throat. Sort of sucks all the space out of my mouth as I swallow and its giving me a little kick in the ribs. by @taol_bart

Carbonara alla what was in the fridge

Sort of like an efficacy test for the teeth or the bleep test in school spinach to bacon to pasta. I passed the test. Wondered if this was the best attempt at carbonara sauce I’d ever made but cannot tell, felt good.
Listened to “industry baby” on repeat whilst cooking and eating, got quite a lot of sauce on the stove.

Also don’t worry, I’m quite enjoying eating without taste or smell it’s like trying foods from different countries and exploring flavour profiles except the reverse and I don’t have to try so hard. Or like being a child experiencing food for the fist time. Chewing is boring but spinach is suddenly so interesting by @taol_bart
