AFMI Creators is all about connecting Arab American filmmakers with each other, resources, mentorship, and opportunities. Today, we’re highlighting Tara Baghdassarian’s first feature length documentary, The Dragon Under Our Feet, currently in production!

The film follows Tara’s journey as a multi-disciplinary artist learning about Armenian carpets in both the San Francisco Bay Area and Armenia. Her hands create a contemporary stained glass piece in homage to Armenian carpets, illuminating a forgotten history that elicits more questions than answers. As the symbols take shape, the stories of her subjects begin to unfold.

Through her art practice, Tara dives into the meaning of traditional Armenian carpets, unveiling the symbols and history woven into rugs, with emphasis on the dragon (vishap) motif. Themes of cultural erasure, diaspora, and war will entwine as she navigates through a country facing ongoing violence while asking the question - what stories have these carpets survived to tell? And what makes them Armenian?

Head to the LINK IN OUR BIO to watch her pitch video and donate to help bring this documentary to life 🐉 by @tarabagss
