beacon, 2021, for Noor Riyadh Festival

“Beacon is a large-scale sculptural installation that invites viewers to be immersed in a dazzling white light in the form of a pillar which points towards the sky to evoke the sublime matters between heaven and earth. On one hand, the light pillar is used as a sign of guidance and protection; on the other, its white light includes all colors of the spectrum and refers to the concepts of completeness, of fullness. The piece has a monumental quality that acts as a beacon, yet also offers a small, intimate space that viewers can enter, experiencing the work from the inside, shifting their perception and being embraced by an unexpected, extraordinary brightness. Its formal simplicity and the purity of its white light generate a mysterious yet calming effect on those who approach it.”

scanner room, 2014 for Center of Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle

“Usually, scanning is used to represent images or to read encoded, written messages. Therefore, overexposure to light may be treated as a kind of a potential introspection, a state of concentration, a meeting and exchange with one’s own self. Its intensity develops with time and may get you close to meditation, but it can also take the form of a momentary flash of light, a transient feeling or image.”

Field, 2020, for Goldstucke Art Festival

“Field is a large scale site-specific light installation that balances between natural and supernatural sensations. It can recall the flight journey, walking on a sea pier or reaching the mountain top. The purity of the white light and the simple form of the work brings serenity, while the migrating fog inside the installation underlines its elusive and ephemeral character. The experimental design can bring a new experience of an illuminative skywalk that holds the possibility to get closer to the sublime light immersion.”

Grove, Venise Biennale 2021

“Grove is a delicate and beautiful gathering space that offers a vision for inclusive, open building. A soaring, undulating canopy of luminous, lace-like clouds embedded with liquid-filled glass vessels hovers above a central pool-shaped screen, into which a film, called Grove Cradle, by London-based Warren du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones is projected.

Together, the film and sound environment offer visitors an almost overwhelmingly intense experience of innumerable worlds falling into chaos and rising again in new life. Inspired by the form language of Beesley’s “living architecture” environments, the film’s intricate geometries move from inert crystalline minerals into surging life forms. Within an astral, dream-like vision of constant metamorphosis, a child-like being emerges, reflecting the fundamental journey from death into new life. Rising and falling in cycles, deeply fragmented wilderness is interwoven with shimmering, hopeful light. Whispering voices emerge from cavernous depths, creating an emotional passage from suffering through new life and innocent wonder.”

Spring Dragon Tail, 2015

“Chorusing granular synthesis-based interactive sound makes a whispering, murmuring ocean that 'speaks' interactively within the suspended canopy of the Chun Long Tiao 'Spring Dragon Tail' sculpture. The permanent acquisition by the Shangdu Li corporation opened October 2015 as part of the Interactive Watertown exhibition in Shanghai. The exhibition is part of the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season urban design series. The canopy floats within a glass-enclosed central theatre building that focuses urban development around a historic district of canals and gardens to the west of the urban core.”

Meander, 2020

“Meander is a large-scale immersive testbed environment constructed within a historic warehouse building at the centre of a residential highrise development in Cambridge, Ontario. The meshwork scaffolds which comprise the testbed are organized as a series of species within an artificial ecosystem, gently flexing and responding to the movement of viewers. Similar to natural environments such as rivers and clouds, large groups of parts pass physical impulses and data signals back and forth, enabling the entire environment to work as an interconnected whole. The innovations in Meander suggest ways of making adaptive, sensitive buildings of the future.”

// Kate MccGwire @kate_mccgwire

sominal, 2019

“Kate MccGwire's practice probes the beauty inherent in duality, exploring the play of opposites - at an aesthetic, intellectual and visceral level - that characterizes the way we conceive the world. She does this by appealing to our essential duality as human beings, to our senses and our reason, and by drawing on materials capable of embodying a dichotomous way of seeing, feeling and thinking. The finished work has a consistent 'otherness' to it that places it beyond our experience of the world, poised on a threshold between the parameters that define everyday reality.

Much of Kate's practice references Freud's 'Unheimliche' (the uncanny, or, literally, the 'unhomely'), the idea of a place where the familiar can somehow excite fear. It also embraces artistic notions of the Abject. In so doing the artist creates a shift from a world in which objects sit in their conventional place and allows a new perspective, exposing the viewer, in the most visceral way possible, to the truths that lurk behind the familiar and to the reality of what it is to be human – a brutal but also unrelentingly beautiful consciousness of the ugly and the funereal, fear and disgust.”

// Motoi Yamamoto

salt has always been deeply linked to people’s lives in the East and West. In Japan, it is an indispensable substance for customs such as funerals.

“I have thought about and engaged with people’s deaths and how they relate to society. Initially, I addressed various themes such as sutras and end-of-life care using a wide range of materials, but when I took an interest in funerals, the material I chose was salt.

I started using salt because it represents purification and cleansing, but I was also strongly attracted to the whiteness, with its slightly transparent quality. Salt is a colorless and transparent cube, a crystal. This smooth, gentle color enveloped my heart in an embrace as it was wracked with feelings of loss.”
