TARA KHOZEIN
∞ 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔

For our 2026 Summer Festival, 𝑳𝑰𝑴𝑰𝑻𝑳𝑬𝑺𝑺 𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑬, soprano and songmaker Tara Khozein (@taraling) presented ∞ 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔, a cycle of eight original works for solo voice responding to texts by Laurie Anderson, Luciano Berio, Forugh Farrokhzad, Christopher Knowles, Ezra Pound, Lou Reed, Shane Weeks, and Robert Wilson. Throughout the Festival she gathered intimate audiences for ephemeral performances that wrapped around the listener — a musical time capsule, conceived to hold this singular moment at The Watermill Center.

Khozein’s autumn continues abroad: Vienna with ZOE at MTTW (September 18–19), then Budapest with JazzaJ at House of Music (September 25) and Kat & Dev at Lumen (September 29), followed by 𝑲𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒍 at Jedermann (October 21) and the 𝑺𝒚𝒍𝒗𝒊𝒂 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 (October 27). It was such a dream to work on this with everyone above, but especially with the darling Apollo Garcia-Orellana. We agreed together to credit him as movement director and stage designer, because I directed the first version of this production back in 2019, so the bones of the project were already there… but the truth is that we built this version together, as we always do with everything. We agreed on every movement quality, every lighting concept, every vibe shift, and every staging idea. We built the birdcage together through trial and error in my mother’s living room, and we spoke on end about the dramaturgy and stylistic world of the piece. Our collaboration has lasted around two decades, and it is magic. I hope that we find more opportunities to work together in this way in the future!

The chamber ensemble from Chatter’s network was predictably wonderful to work with, and all of them were so so so so game to step into their roles as birds of King George III. I watched our documentation video last night, and I was just so happy and proud to see the way that all of our birds felt liberated to flap, prune, and molt at ALL the right moments. Michael Hix was a vision to behold as the king, and just such a dreamy colleague throughout the process! I’m so glad that he is finding time to continue his performance career while he leads the Music Department at UNM.

This world needs more musicians (and humans!) like the ones in these photos. Thank you, dear team for trusting us, for being SO DOWN, and for making something that I think audiences will remember. by @taraling

A képen három, BIO x Sonus Cordis próbától beboldogult ember látható. @eszterkrulik valamiért épp mintha le akarna csapni a kabátjával, de @taraling ezen csak nevet. Szeptember 25-én a @magyarzenehaza -ban a JAZZAJ 15 koncerten remélem mindent tisztázni tudunk.

A @lumenkavezo -nak pedig köszönjük a próbahelyet! by @taraling

This year, I will be among the artists at the Watermill Center’s International Summer Program!

The founder, iconic theatre director and visual artist Robert Wilson, has been one of my heroes since I learned of his work two decades ago. This will be the first summer residency program since his passing last July. It seems fitting to enter into the history of this place at this moment of transition, since, it turns out I am a changeling.

I never met Robert Wilson, but I saw his shadow sweep across his bedroom window last summer. I was speaking with a dear friend at the time:
‘Oh. Is that—’
‘Oh. Yes.’
And then he was gone.

It was entirely nonchalant, but Wilson was a master of light and timing, and I sense there was nothing accidental about the placement of the lamp behind that gauzy window and the way he stepped in and out of frame. I imagined that even when he couldn’t provide his presence in the garden, he offered us his silhouette.

Theatre is not only spectacle and stories. It is also the way we give ourselves to others. It is the art of context; the direction of focus; the how, what, where, when that makes the why (to borrow Bambara’s perfect word) irresistible.

I am honored to be included among this kaleidoscope cohort, and also to represent both the US and my chosen home of Hungary there. I hope I am able to use this precious time well, and that I can both develop my project and find meaningful ways to support the work of others.

In this proscenium of apparitions, may we go after our questions (to borrow József’s perfect words) like dogs after sausages. by @taraling

Being at the @moersfestival felt like stepping into an amazingly joyful world built entirely around curiosity, openness, and musical experiments✨

We began on the main stage with @pleasureofthetext ‘s After Nan Shepherd: stark, dark, spacious music that felt really thrilling to share in that setting. It was also wonderful to collaborate with the luminous@taraling for the first time on this project!

Then came Yarn/Wire Currents 12, featuring pieces by Jonah Haven and @bergrun_______ . The resonance in the church was extraordinary, and this program is both beautiful and weird in the best of ways… catch it at @roulette_intermedium in NYC THIS THURSDAY.

There was also the Pianomobil (a Moers institution) @julia_den_boer got to perform for residents at a retirement home, rolling through the park, and bring music into unexpected corners of the city.

We’re very grateful to everyone who listened, organized, helped, and shared these days with us.
