"The first bowl was probably intended to contain water or food: its form is therefore dependent on one of the most basic of human activities, that of eating and drinking. On another, more metaphorical level, it can also be said that a full and open bowl both withholds and offers in a single measure and in the same gesture. An empty bowl is different, as it holds the potential for either giving or receiving. This coincidence is a reflection of the state of contemplative consciousness, in which all things are born and to which they all return." Art-historian John Hutchinson in his essay The Bowl.

"First made during the Han dynasty (206 B.C - A.D. 220), high-fired brown-and-black-glazed ceramics developed during the succeeding centuries, culminating in the wares of the Song (960-1279), Jin (1115-1234), and Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties, their "Golden Age." Even after they fell from favour in China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), such ceramics continued to be treasured in Japan, where they are known as tenmoku wares and are associated with the tea ceremony. Their influence extends to the present..." From the opening of Robert D. Mowry's Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400–1400. “An experience, a very humble experience, is capable of generating and carrying any amount of theory (or intellectual content), but a theory apart from an experience cannot be definitely grasped even as a theory.” From John Dewey, Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education. Wood-fired teapots in warm, mid-iron bearing stoneware with local feldspar inclusions. Lined in celadons made from local softwood ash. I've been spending a lot of time studying the full-bodied forms of Svend Bayer.
