What bothered me most about the footage from Delhi is the apparent difference in how people were treated. People attempting to protest were detained before they could even reach the venue. Meanwhile, videos and eyewitness reports show groups of men assaulting and intimidating protesters, including women, in areas with a heavy police presence.

If restrictions were imposed in the name of public safety, then that safety should have extended to the protesters too. The law should protect people equally, regardless of what they believe or who they support.

More power to the people who went to ask questions today and the journalists who went to document what happened. Regardless of our differences, there has to be room for dissent and accountability in a democracy.

Every woman I know seems to have a terrifying story. Maybe that’s what we need to stop accepting as normal.
