sunday reading update ❤️‍🔥

i’m over halfway through ninth house and loving it. it does such a good job at toeing the line between urban fantasy and horror, and i adore alex and darlington’s characters. i was able to go to the leigh bardugo event in austin last week, and it was such a joy getting to hear her speak about this series and her writing process.

i finished listening to one dark window on audio (yes, i finally got around to it!) and rated it four stars. the dark, eerie magic really creates the perfect atmosphere, and after that cliffhanger, i’ve already placed a hold for book two at my library. was i… supposed to love the nightmare that much?

i also started listening to the seventh volume in the emma m. lion series, and each installment is better than the last. a new favorite series of mine for sure !!!

i’ve been spending a lot of time outside amidst the chaos of the past few weeks. happy end of september 🤍 by @taylerreads

the last dregs of august 🌟🧚🏻🪴🦢

i took a long weekend with my best friend to the coast and it was lovely. early morning reading, walks on the beach, chimes above shop doors, restaurants filled with clinks and chatter, long drives during golden hour, smudged ink in my journal, cool linen sheets at the end of warm days. love, love, love.

i’m not succumbing to the fall propaganda until the temperature drops below 80 y’all, sorry !!!

eurosummer except i’m in the south reading european lit by creeks, springs + lakes.

read a few books recently:
bonjour tristesse — really enjoyed this one. a heady french summer written by a teenage girl in 1954, quite impressive!
atmosphere — navigator, this book had me in shambles. loved.
the lure of wolves and whispers — unputdownable and finished around midnight last night, itching for book two.
wild love — recent contemp romance is such a hit or miss for me and unfortunately, i didn’t love this. pleaaase can we be rid of trope centered romance!

the past few weeks have been lovely. dips in and out of cold springs with my little sister to escape the heat, small town burgers shared afterwards. jumps into overflowing lakes with friends, rainy evenings in movie theaters, breakfasts with my grandfather. reading late into the night with my dog, exchanging manuscripts with one of my best friends, lunch breaks spent at nurseries. welcoming august! by @taylerreads

games: a love story 💌

it isn’t often that i have a book reach deep within me and pull, demanding me to engage. even less often that i feel this seen and splayed open, which is perhaps why i read in the first place.

games is a literary romance set in new york city, soaked with summer rain in inescapable heat, focusing on our two main characters: lili marwan and aleksandr petrov. lili, a democratic socialist in grad school, drowning in the grief of her parents; and aleksandr, an older wallstreet banker, fiercly neoliberal capitalist, who escaped the soviet union at a young age.

i am (to a fault) what most people would probably consider a political person, and this scratched an itch in my brain i didn’t know i’d been looking for. lili and aleksandr’s verbal sparring felt like watching two sides of myself play tug of war, waiting to see who would win out. and, unlike many books i’ve read recently, it demands something of the reader— it requires you to think, rather than simply handing information over to you. immensely refreshing.

games was sold to me as sex meets economics, and it is, but it’s also about what it means to crack yourself open and let it all spill out. what your hands could hold if you let go of pain, and the strange peace that comes with surviving something. but more importantly, to build a life afterward. the ways in which we clutch power to ours chests, even to our own detriment. to let people love you. the exploration of grief and mental health, healing and friendship, and love itself had me sobbing. no, actually. like, blubbering.

it had so many of my favorite things squeezed in. european summers, novels and records, ART, dinners with friends. and, listen, as soon as the first date he took her on was a night inside the closed MET — i’m sorry. i’d seen enough. sold. and, my god. anna’s writing? to die for. the descriptions, the internal monologues, i couldn’t get enough. she wrote two raw characters who would do anything for one another, and i couldn’t look away. i already can’t wait to reread.

thank you @williammorrowbooks @annamariavolkova for an early copy of one of my new favorite books ❤️‍🔥 by @taylerreads

sunday reading update 🌿🕊️👒

finished reading two books this week! i really enjoyed listening to the correspondent. i love any story written through letters or journal entries. it had me going to the stationary store promptly, and now my friends and i are starting to send each other letters again :) the impact of books !!!

also read we hexed the moon. what a gem of a book! it was comp’d to bunny (one of my favorite books ever) and i loved it. it had great commentary on girlhood, sexuality, grief and climate change, with stellar use of magical realism. despite it’s short length, it really packed a punch for me.

hope ur all having a good weekend :) terrified to tune into house of the dragon tonight, but will follow it up with love island brain rot. brinity forever. okay bye for now <3 by @taylerreads
