We, the Georgian LGBTQ+ community and human rights defenders, stand in solidarity with Türkiye’s LGBTQ+ community ✊

Over the past few days, Türkiye has seen a major escalation in the crackdown against LGBTQ+ people, activists, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations, with dozens detained, websites and social media accounts restricted, and civic space further shrinking.

❗️This is a moment to make solidarity visible: This Friday, September 18, people around the world are being called to stand in solidarity with Türkiye’s LGBTQ+ community and to protest these attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, civil society, and freedom of expression.

What is happening in Türkiye feels painfully familiar. In Georgia, we have also faced state repression under anti-LGBTQ+ legislation presented in the name of “family values”, used to restrict our rights, silence our voices and target our communities. Across borders, we recognize the same dangerous pattern: portraying LGBTQ+ people and human rights defenders as a threat to society, and using the protection of “family” as a justification for repression.

To LGBTQ+ people in Türkiye: you are seen, valued, and not alone. We stand with you in the ongoing fight for equality, freedom and human rights. 🫂

As we enter the fall season, we would like to look back on the exhibition we organized displaying the fragments from the 2023 attack on the Tbilisi Pride Festival.

Burned flags, torn banners, damaged materials, stolen and destroyed festival items carry traces of violence, destruction, and looting. These Tender Ruins are not only evidence of what has been destroyed; They can also hold memory, resistance, and the possibility of rebuilding.

Exhibited Objects:

Slide 1: “სიყვარული ყველას უნდა / Everyone Wants Love” – A popular Georgian phrase originating from the title of a 1980 Georgian film.

Slide 2: European Union flag – EU flag burned by far-right groups during the attack.

Slide 3: • “სიყვარულს ვერ დაამარცხებ / Love Cannot Be Defeated” armbands – Armbands bearing the slogan of the 2023 Pride Week campaign, burned by far-right groups during the attack.

Slide 4: Pink yoga mat – A yoga corner was set up for Pride Festival guests. During the attack, far-right activists stole the pink yoga mats (!) from the festival site.

Slide 5: Damaged poster of the Stonewall Riots – Part of an exhibition about the Stonewall Riots presented at the Pride Festival. The exhibition was destroyed during the attack.

Slide 6: Pride Festival wristband – A wristband for Pride Festival attendees, found among the ruins of the festival site after the attack.

Slide 7: Destroyed Pride T-shirt – A piece of Pride merchandise damaged during the attack. The Pride flag was deliberately cut out from the center of the shirt, leaving a visible absence where the symbol of Pride once was.

Slide 8: Conservative Movement flag – The flag of the far-right group that organized and led the attack on the 2023 Pride Festival. Its leaders have still not been arrested.

QUEER WEEK – TWO korte FILMS FROM GEORGIA

Een avond van film, gesprek, performance en ontmoeting tijdens Queer Week 2026, georganiseerd door @hetrozehuisantwerpen

Binnen deze Queer Week organiseren BelGeo en @tbilisipride , in samenwerking met Het Roze Huis, op 14 september een eigen programma in het Red Star Line Museum rond queer verhalen uit Georgië.

We vertonen twee korte documentaires die verschillende persoonlijke verhalen vertellen over queer identiteit, kunst, activisme en vrijheid.

🎬 ANDRO

@andro.dadiani____ is een Georgische queer performancekunstenaar en dichter. Via performance en kunst onderzoekt hij identiteit, zichtbaarheid en de strijd voor queer expressie in Georgië.

🎬 BART NIKOLO

@bart.nikolo is een Georgische trans activist. Zijn verhaal gaat over identiteit, veerkracht en de realiteit van queer en trans personen in Georgië. (8 minuten)

💬 PANELDISCUSSIE – WE CARRIED OUR PRIDE

Na de films gaan we samen in gesprek over wat het betekent om queer te zijn, je land te verlaten en je identiteit, cultuur en strijd mee te nemen.

Moderator: Tamar Jakeli

@tata.jakeli is een Georgische queer en feministische activist en directeur van Tbilisi Pride. Ze is actief rond queer rechten, democratie en sociale rechtvaardigheid in Georgië en brengt haar eigen ervaring met queer activisme en maatschappelijke verandering mee naar het gesprek.

De panelleden worden later bekendgemaakt.

💃 DRAG DANCE PERFORMANCE

Tussen de verschillende onderdelen van het programma brengen we een bijzondere drag dance performance door een queer vluchteling uit Colombia.

🍲 GEORGISCHE HAPJES

Tijdens de avond voorzien we Georgische hapjes, zodat bezoekers kunnen kennismaken met de Georgische keuken en cultuur en elkaar kunnen ontmoeten.

On 8 July 2023, a far-right mob attacked Tbilisi Pride Festival with the support and encouragement of officials from the “Georgian Dream” government, destroying the festival site and forcing us to evacuate the area.

The following day, Tbilisi Pride returned to document the damage and save what could be saved. Some of the destroyed objects were brought to Parliament, making visible the connection between the violence and those who enabled it.

“Tender Ruins” brings these fragments, burned flags, torn banners, and damaged festival materials, from Tbilisi to Antwerp. They carry traces of violence, but also memory, resistance, courage, and the possibility of rebuilding.

We carried our Pride 🌈

Vandaag stapte BelGeo Fusion en @tbilisipride mee in de Antwerp Pride, samen met queer Georgiërs, vrienden, bondgenoten en iedereen die gelooft dat vrijheid geen grenzen kent.

Voor velen van ons is Pride meer dan een feest.
Het is een herinnering aan wat we achterlieten, aan waar we nog steeds voor strijden en aan waarom we weigeren stil te blijven.

🇬🇪 Van Georgië naar België dragen we onze verhalen, onze veerkracht en onze hoop met ons mee.

We stappen voor wie vandaag niet kan meestappen.
We spreken voor wie het zwijgen wordt opgelegd.
En we staan samen, fearless, over grenzen heen.

Dank aan iedereen die vandaag met ons meestapte, ons steunde, met ons danste en onze aanwezigheid zichtbaar maakte. ❤️

Pride is niet alleen een parade.
Pride is solidariteit. Pride is verzet. Pride is vrijheid.
Pride is protest!

An attack on Pride is an attack on democracy. Pride remains a revolutionary act. It requires protection, solidarity, and civic participation. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

🌈 BelGeo Fusion is trots om partner te zijn van Antwerpen Queer Arts Festival @antwerpqueerartsfestival en @merhaba.vzw tijdens een bijzondere avond op 14 augustus in @het_bos .

Als BelGeo brengen we een programma waarin kunst, cultuur en mensenrechten samenkomen. Een avond die de verhalen van queer Georgische vluchtelingen en kunstenaars centraal stelt, en ruimte creëert voor ontmoeting, dialoog en solidariteit.

Queer visueel kunstenaar uit Georgië. Haar illustraties vertellen verhalen over migratie, identiteit, vrijheid en veerkracht.

🎭 Performance – @andro.dadiani____
Multidisciplinair kunstenaar, performer en dichter. Zijn werk verkent thema’s als queer identiteit, politieke onderdrukking en overleven, en werd reeds internationaal gepresenteerd.

🍲 Volxkeuken – Miranda Okujava
Geniet van authentieke Georgische gerechten, bereid door trans activist en chef Miranda Okujava. Een tafel waar cultuur, zorg en gemeenschap samenkomen.

Persoonlijke verhalen over migratie, queer identiteit, verlies, hoop en verzet.

🕯️ Installatie @tbilisipride
Een indringende installatie met beschadigde en verbrande objecten als stille getuigen van de realiteit waarmee LGBTQIA+ personen in Georgië nog steeds worden geconfronteerd. Een krachtig contrast tussen vrijheid en repressie.

Bij BelGeo Fusion geloven we dat kunst een krachtig middel is om mensen met elkaar te verbinden, verhalen zichtbaar te maken en solidariteit te versterken. Daarom zijn we bijzonder dankbaar om als partner deel uit te maken van deze betekenisvolle avond.

This year, Tbilisi Pride and @belgeo.official join forces to represent the Georgian queer community at Antwerp Pride with a message shaped by cross-border resilience, resistance, and solidarity 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🇬🇪

For many of us, crossing borders was not a choice but a consequence of escalating repression, violence, and anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Georgia. With us, we carried our commitment to equality, dignity, and freedom. We carried the stories of our community, the courage of those who continue to resist, and the hope that one day everyone in Georgia will be able to celebrate who they are, freely and safely.

We carried our Pride ❤️‍🩹🥹

As we march in Antwerp, we stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ people in Georgia. We want to emphasize that an attack on the LGBTQ+ community is an attack on democracy itself, and that solidarity across borders is more important than ever ✊🇬🇪🇪🇺

Gisteravond gebeurde er iets bijzonders. 🇬🇪🇧🇪🏳️‍🌈

We kwamen samen. Georgiërs en Belgen. Queer mensen en bondgenoten. Vreemden die vrienden werden.

Er werden woorden gesproken die bleven hangen. Er werd gedanst alsof het moest. Er werd gegeten met liefde. Er werd gehuild. Er werd gelachen. Er werd gevochten, met kunst, met stem, met aanwezigheid.

Dit was de tweede Belgeo Night.
Maar niet de laatste.

Dank aan iedereen die er was. Jullie aanwezigheid was geen klein gebaar, jullie waren er ook voor iedereen die niet kon komen.
