Want to become a better runner? Stop ONLY running.

Running builds endurance, but strength training helps build a stronger, more resilient athlete.

You don’t have to choose between being strong and being a runner.

And you don’t need to spend hours in the gym.

Start with 2 strength sessions a week.

Squat. Hinge. Lunge. Push. Pull. Carry.

Keep it simple. Stay consistent. Let the work add up.

Don’t just build a better runner. Build a stronger athlete.

New runners are really good at running.

You know what we’re terrible at?

Not running.

Once you start seeing progress, taking a day off can feel like you’re losing it.

But more running doesn’t always mean more progress.

Training gives your body a reason to adapt. Recovery gives it the opportunity to actually do it.

So take the rest day. Eat well. Hydrate. Get some sleep. Then come back ready to work.

Rest days aren’t missed training. They ARE training.

Struggling to run faster as a beginner? Don’t start by pushing harder—start by building a stronger foundation.

When you’re new to running, it’s tempting to jump straight into intervals, tempo runs, and hard workouts.

You don’t need to rush it.

Build your easy miles.
Get consistent.
Let your body adapt.

Then start adding small doses of speed.

And remember—running fast doesn’t mean sprinting until you’re destroyed. Speed should be controlled, relaxed, and something you gradually build into your training.

Build the runner first. Then build the speed.

Your long run is YOUR long run.

It doesn’t have to be 10, 15, or 20 miles to count.

If 3 miles is the farthest you’ve run this week, that’s your long run. Be proud of it.

Keep the effort comfortable. Forget about pace. And give your body time to adapt as you slowly build the distance.

3 miles becomes 4.
4 becomes 5.
And eventually, distances that once felt impossible become normal.

Build from where you are—not where somebody else is.

Zone 2 doesn’t have to be complicated.

Your watch might show you a bunch of numbers, zones, and heart-rate data—but don’t let an easy run turn into a science experiment.

Keep it simple:

Controlled effort
You can speak in full sentences
Breathing feels comfortable
You feel like you could keep going

And if that means slowing WAY down or mixing in some walking? That’s okay.

Your watch is a tool. Don’t let it run the run.

Learn what easy feels like and build from there.

Want to get faster at running?

You might need to spend more time running slower.

Not every run needs to be a test. Not every mile needs to beat yesterday’s pace.

Your easy days have a purpose.

Slow down. Control your breathing. Run at an effort where you could hold a conversation and finish feeling like you had more in the tank.

Save the hard effort for the hard days.

Let your easy runs be EASY.

Slow down. Build the engine. The speed will come.

Congrats to my brother @kyle_benning on his success. Against all odds, mental warfare and bad weather, he managed to place an arrow perfectly at 60 yards. What you don’t see in the photo is all the hard work, practice, logistics and prep that went into this hunt. It’s only the beginning. by @tcamss

Stop waiting until you feel “ready.”

Pick a race. Sign up. Put it on the calendar.

Your first race isn’t about setting some crazy time.

It’s about giving yourself something to work toward.

The early mornings.
The easy miles.
The hard runs.
The days you didn’t feel like showing up.

Now they have a purpose.

And when you cross that first finish line, you might realize you became a runner somewhere along the way.

Pick the race. Then go earn that finish line.

Don’t let somebody else’s run make you less proud of yours.

You ran 3 miles and felt great… then opened Strava and saw someone casually run 10 miles faster than you.

Remember—you’re only seeing their run, not the years of work that came before it.

Stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s progress.

Look back at where YOU were a month ago.

Your pace. Your miles. Your journey.

Keep stacking your own miles.

One bad run doesn’t erase months of progress.

Some days your legs feel heavy. Your breathing feels off. A pace that normally feels easy suddenly feels HARD.

Bad sleep. Stress. Heat. Nutrition.

Or sometimes… running just sucks that day.

Don’t overthink it.

Take the bad run for what it is, recover, and show up again.

Don’t judge months of progress by one bad run.

Time trials are one way to see where you are at fitness wise and also a way to make any adjustments to the plan you’re currently on. Stoked on a pr but at the end of the day it’s time to get back to work. by @tcamss
