The Tchoban Foundation is dedicating the first comprehensive exhibition outside Japan to the work of Nizo Yamamoto (1953–2023). In Japan his work has long enjoyed great recognition. Internationally, however, his name remains far less well known than the films he helped shape. Through his art direction for Castle in the Sky (1986), Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) and many others, his imagery is familiar to audiences worldwide.

The exhibition has been realised in close collaboration with Takao Yamamoto, the son of Nizo Yamamoto @nizo_yamamoto and with Kobe Shimbun kobeshinbun.

With „Nizo Yamamoto – Master of Anime Scenography“, the Museum for Architectural Drawing continues its series of exhibitions on background art in Japanese animation: in 2016, „Anime Architecture“ showed the urban spaces of major science-fiction anime such as Patlabor (1989), Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Ghost in the Shell 2 – Innocence (2004); in 2022, „AKIRA – The Architecture of Neo Tokyo“ presented the original background art from the groundbreaking film AKIRA (1988) for the first time anywhere.

With the generous support of Nippon Animation, TMS, Studio Ghibli, Shinchosha, Studio Chizu @studio_chizu, TOHO.

The materials used in analogue background painting in Japan remained largely unchanged from the 1970s onwards. The most important of these were Nicker Poster Colour paints, TMK Poster paper and Namura Taiseido brushes. Two main types of brushes can be distinguished: flat brushes for applying larger areas of colour, and round brushes for detail work and line work. In addition, specialised brushes such as karabake for blending and mizufude for moistening surfaces were used. Despite this standardised set of tools, each artist developed their own techniques for handling material, moisture and brushwork.

We wish our founder and greatest supporter Sergei Tchoban the happiest of birthdays!

For everyone in Argentina, we also have a special exhibition tip for you:
There is currently an exhibition at the Casa Curutchet in La Plata (Buenos Aires), Argentina, showcasing drawings by Sergei Tchoban. In the exhibition titled “Dibujando a Le Corbusier” and curated by Agustina Pascotto, Tchoban discovers and explores Le Corbusier’s design philosophy through the practice of hand drawing. His drawings explore different geographies and moments in Le Corbusier’s career and are Tchoban’s own attempt of understand how ideas take shape, evolve over time, and how hand drawing continues to be, for an architect, a way of understanding the great legacy of Le Corbusier.

Nizo Yamamoto (1953–2023) was a Japanese art director and background artist widely regarded as one of the most influential creative minds in Japanese animation. Over the course of more than four decades, he created visual worlds that have left a lasting impression on the genre’s visual landscape.
By nineteen, Yamamoto moved to Tokyo where he enrolled in a vocational school for animation. During his studies, he simultaneously worked in a background art studio.
Later in his career, Yamamoto most famously worked on several Studio Ghibli films, including “Castle in the Sky” (1986), “Grave of the Fireflies” (1988), and “Princess Mononoke” (1997). A wide range of his drawings can be found in our upcoming exhibition “Nizo Yamamoto – Master of Anime Scenography”.

In the age of digital overload, it is even more important to find some peace and quiet in the real world. One way to find tranquillity is the retreat to tangible things. And for that, we have an idea for you: Tsumiki!
As some of you might know, our past exhibition “Kengo Kuma – The Flow of Lines through the Lens of Erieta Attali” featured an installation in the shape of a wooden pyramid. The blocks used are called Tsumiki. It’s a playful invention made in cooperation between the architect Kengo Kuma and the musician and founder of the forest conservation organisation More Trees, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Sets of Tsumiki used in our installation are now available for purchase in our online shop or at the museum.
You can find more information on our website at https://tchoban-foundation-shop.de/p/tsumiki-22-bausteine .

It’s always a bit sad to say goodbye to an exhibition. But we made so many wonderful memories thanks to all those who made this exhibition possible and all those who visited! A big thank you to Kengo Kuma and Erieta Attali for the great opportunity to exhibit their works. Likewise, thanks to Sergei Tchoban for being our biggest supporter and advocate!
We are now going back to remodelling and preparing our rooms for our upcoming exhibition “Nizo Yamamoto – Master of Anime Scenography”. The museum will be closed until October 3, 2026.
Stay tuned to find out more soon…

For our last exhibition weekend, we chose this drawing for you. It shows one of Kuma ‘s more recent projects. It’s called Forestgate Daikanyama, located in Japan and built in 2003. The drawing depicts the iconic wood façade structure. This structure is what the building is renowned for today.
