I am excited and honored to be invited to @litquake, a very cool month-long literary extravaganza in the Bay Area. I’ll be on this panel discussing alternate paths to publishing: “The Unconventional Author: Side Doors and Secret Passages to Publication.”

Looking forward to sharing the winding story of how I found my excellent publisher @natlanticbooks (or how we found each other!)

Thanks @janine.kovac for the invite! taken in San Francisco, California by @tdorabji

On September 24, 2026, I was traveling from San Francisco International Airport to Dulles with my dear friend, Arfat Sheikh, who is the award-winning filmmaker of Saffron Kingdom. We were en route from San Francisco to Washington, DC, for the “Art as Resistance” event at Busboys and Poets. As I got off the plane in Dulles, I walked by Arfat, without realizing that he had been pulled aside on the jetway. Arfat called out to me, and I turned around. He was surrounded by numerous men. Arfat said to me, “Tara, Tara. This is ICE. They have come for me.” I never saw any of the men present a warrant or say why they were taking Arfat. They took Arfat Sheikh.

Arfat dedicated his life to speaking truth and defending human rights. He is one of the kindest and most courageous people I know. Arfat created Saffron Kingdom as a form of collective memory and truth-telling to tell the story of his people. It is devastating that someone who spent years bringing stories of human rights violations in war-torn regions to international audiences is in ICE detention, facing the conditions Arfat has dedicated his life to end. Arfat is one of the most compassionate, kind, honest, and dedicated people I know. Even inside the detention facility, Arfat continues to show courage, his love for life, and his gift for creating community. Arfat Sheikh must be released from detention immediately and returned to his home and community. #FreeArfatSheikh Supporters of Arfat Sheikh launched a GoFundMe Campaign to help cover Sheikh’s legal representation
and support his immediate community needs during this difficult time. More information can be found at

Washington, DC!

🗓️ Saturday, September 26th
⏰ 1:30pm-3:30pm
📌 Busboys and Poets, 450 K St NW

RSVP: https://bit.ly/kashmir1026

Join our conversation with Daffodil Studios and Tara Dorabji, author and award-winning filmmaker, addressing the experiences of torture survivors in Kashmir.

Filmed in one of the most densely militarized lands on earth, Here Still documents the experiences of torture survivors in Kashmir, shedding light on one of the greatest atrocities of our times. Here Still is one of the only international documentaries that captures the complexity and vibrancy of the Kashmiri resistance movement. Shot during a temporary cease fire in 2018, Here Still provides a glimpse into the reality of life in Indian Occupied Kashmir with exclusive footage from torture survivors and human rights activists.

Far-right Hindutva nationalists funneled hundreds of millions of dollars rewriting Kashmir's history through propaganda films via the Indian film industry, which happens to be the largest film industry in the world. Tara's documentary turns our attention toward those whose lives have been shaped by the violence that these narratives seek to erase.
