Still thinking about these days in Oslo ❤️💙🇳🇴
A few highlights from the International Sauna Association Congress @saunainternational @saunacongress2026 a couple of weeks ago.

Great people, inspiring conversations and lots of sauna talk. ❤️ Different countries, different traditions, different perspectives, sauna bringing us together. 🌍❤️‍🔥

The congress opened in Oslo City Hall, the magnificent building where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. What a setting for a global sauna community to come together. It felt particularly fitting, as Sauna Aid @sauna.aid puts it: “There is no war in sauna.” 🧖‍♀️🔥🕊️

And what a place to experience it. Oslo, the capital of floating saunas, gave the sauna community a true prime spot right in the heart of the city. It was amazing to see how the city has embraced sauna culture and created space for the community right at its centre.

A huge thank you to the organisers @norges_badstulaug for the incredible work behind this congress. Bringing together people from all over the world and creating meaningful encounters takes an incredible amount of work behind the scenes, and it showed.

Taking home new ideas, new connections and plenty of inspiration.

Some experiences are worth posting about a little late. 🤍🙏

@furuvik_rantasaunan vakkari Asamasa @asapinnallinen testaamassa saunan löylykauhavalikoimaa! 🪣💦♨️

Kun kyseessä on mies, joka on tehnyt uransa sanoilla, rytmillä ja omaperäisellä ilmaisulla, oli aika antaa hänelle uusi haaste: miltä erilaiset saunakauhat tuntuvat oikeassa käyttäjäkokemuksessa?

Kahva käteen, kauha löylyveteen ja tuntuma kohdilleen.

Asan arvioissa ei tällä kertaa punnittu riimejä, vaan ergonomiaa, käytettävyyttä ja sitä tärkeintä: millaista löylyä kauhalla syntyy.

Furuvikin rantasaunalta löytyy useampi kauha löylyn luomiseen - mikä niistä on sinun suosikkisi? 👀

Asalta tuli testin lomassa myös loistava idea: “Choose your sauna weapon” -hylly, josta jokainen saunoja voisi valita mieluisansa kauhan löylyihin. 🔥🪣

What happens when Finnish sauna culture meets Japan? 🇫🇮🇯🇵♨️
I sat down at @furuvik_rantasauna with Laura Kopilow @laura_from_finland, a Finnish expert based in Japan who works at the intersection of Finland and Japan and has been actively involved in building connections between the two countries through sauna, wellbeing and business.

In our conversation, we dive into Finnish and Japanese sauna culture what makes them different, what they have in common, and how sauna has become an increasingly interesting bridge between the two cultures.

From Finnish löyly to Japanese sauna rituals, we talk about traditions, relaxation, wellbeing and the different ways people experience sauna in Finland and Japan.

Sometimes (=often) it’s honestly a complete nightmare; Screaming kids, lost patience, unexpected chaos and plenty of children’s mischief 😬😅
But in the end, it’s also incredibly rewarding. There’s something special about sharing the world with your children and letting them learn through real experiences, cultures and people. We’re lucky to have a principal and teachers who support this way of learning and understand that children will learn more from the world than from books and lessons in the classroom. 🌍❤️

Thank you, Oslo, you treated us well! 🇳🇴🫶
A special thank you to the @saunacongress2026 congress organizers @norges_badstulaug & specially @estigarild for welcoming my children to join the sauna sessions. It was a meaningful opportunity to experience sauna culture together and to see the children not only as participants, but also as little ambassadors and future storytellers of sauna culture. ❤️‍🔥

Children have an important role in carrying sauna traditions forward. When they are given the opportunity to experience sauna culture naturally from an early age, they can also become its messengers for the next generation and across borders.
My hope is that, in the near future, more countries will embrace children as a natural part of sauna culture and create safe opportunities for families to experience sauna together. 🙏

Sauna is a culture that can be shared by generations and I believe children have a valuable role in helping that culture travel. 🧖‍♀️🧖‍♂️👧🧒🌍

I had an opportunity to interview a wonderful dancer and choreographer Aliya Brinson @thealiyajanell from Los Angeles at Furuvik’s seaside sauna @furuvik_rantasauna. 🎤❤️‍🔥

We talked about sauna culture, her first experiences with Finnish sauna, and what sauna can mean as a space for slowing down, connecting and simply being present.

I loved hearing Aliya’s perspective and seeing the sauna through her eyes. There’s something special about sharing this very Finnish tradition with someone experiencing it from a different cultural perspective.

Thank you Aliya for the beautiful conversation and for bringing your curiosity, warmth and energy into the sauna. ❤️

One thing I’ve really come to appreciate is how many incredible people I get to meet through sauna, both through my work and in my everyday life. Lately, I’ve found myself asking them what sauna means to them. ❤️‍🔥

It’s been fascinating to hear how differently people relate to something that is so familiar to me; from their first time stepping into a sauna to the role it has in their lives today.

For me, sauna belongs to everyone. It’s a place where backgrounds, titles and differences can fade away, and where everyone simply gets to be themselves. ❤️

That curiosity inspired me to start recording these conversations. In this new interview series, I’ll be talking to people from different backgrounds and exploring their stories, memories and relationship with sauna. 🇫🇮🌍

Always a pleasure having amazing sauna people over. 🫶❤️‍🔥
I’ve known Edo and Becky for several years now, and we’ve shared plenty of saunas together in different parts of the world. It was amazing to have both of them, from different corners of the world, here in Finland to sauna together at @villafuruvik.

Becky Peltonen @thirdspaceology is a doctoral student at the @uniuef, researching public sauna as a third space and form of social infrastructure. Her work spans Finland, Norway, Ireland and Canada, exploring the shared values and benefits of public sauna around the world. Becky also runs @kamusauna together with her husband @jupelkon in the East Kootenays, BC, Canada.🏔️🇨🇦

Eetu-Antti Hartikainen (Edo) @saunanokuninoedo is a Finnish specialist in Japanese sauna culture and sauna-going. He is a PhD student at @hokkaidouni in Sapporo, Japan, researching the sustainability and community empowerment of sauna tourism through the values of sauna entrepreneurship across Japan.🇫🇮🇯🇵

Two people who spend their days thinking, researching and talking about sauna and who I’ve been lucky enough to share plenty of sauna moments with over the years. 🙏❤️

This time: Furuvik, sauna, good conversations, fresh chanterelle sauce and some other Finnish food. Sauna really does have a way of bringing people together, wherever in the world you happen to be. 🌍🧖🧖🏾‍♂️

Lately, I received a message from Cam from the US 🇺🇸: “Would you be open to a brief 15–20 minute interview about sauna traditions, etiquette, the meaning of löyly, and how authentic Finnish sauna differs from commercial wellness interpretations?”
Of course, I said yes. 😊

A short interview turned into a wonderful morning at @villafuruvik ; walking in the forest, picking berries, sauna, swimming in the sea and talking about Finnish sauna culture.
Sometimes it takes someone from outside to remind us how special something is that we have always had around us. 🇫🇮

This is how Cam described his experience:
“I’m honestly a little lost for words.
Before coming to Finland, most of my perspective on sauna came from the US and the broader wellness world, where we often think about infrared saunas, cold plunges, recovery tools and wellness technologies.
Furuvik gave me a completely different perspective.
Calling it a ‘facility’ almost feels wrong. You are surrounded by forest, nature and the sea, and there is an immediate sense of calm. I quickly realized this was not a typical spa experience.
Sauna here is not simply a 15-minute recovery session. There is a social and cultural side to it.
We talked about löyly, sauna traditions and the little things that make the experience your own. And then there is the sea. Experiencing the sauna followed by a cold dip, surrounded by nature, was something I had never experienced quite like this before.
We often look at sauna through protocols, temperatures, timers and health benefits. Those things are worth studying. But Furuvik reminded me that wellness can also be about environment, community, tradition and simply being present.
That was probably my biggest takeaway.”

❤️‍🔥SAUNA KUULUU HYVINVOINTIIN!
Miksei saunomista voi kuitenkaan maksaa verovapaalla liikunta- ja kulttuuriedulla?

Yli 15 vuotta saunayrittäjänä toimineena olen kuullut tämän kysymyksen lähes viikoittain:
”Voiko saunamaksun maksaa verovapaalla liikunta- tai kulttuuriedulla?”

Valitettavasti ei voi. Verottajan tulkinnan mukaan etua ei voi käyttää saunamaksuun.

Juuri tämän muuttamiseksi haluan omalta osaltani olla mukana tukemassa @suomensaunaseura'n käynnistämää @setelillasaunaan -kampanjaa.
Sauna on olennainen osa suomalaista kulttuuria, identiteettiä ja hyvinvointia. Suomalainen saunaperinne on myös tunnustettu @unesco'n aineettoman kulttuuriperinnön listalle.

Silti sauna jää tällä hetkellä verovapaan liikunta- tai kulttuuriedun ulkopuolelle. Samaan aikaan etua voi käyttää esimerkiksi kuntosalilla, elokuvissa, konserteissa tai urheilutapahtumissa.

Miksi ei saunassa?
Kyse ei ole siitä, että etujen enimmäismäärää pitäisi kasvattaa. Kyse on siitä, että työntekijällä olisi mahdollisuus käyttää jo olemassa olevaa etua myös saunomiseen. Sauna on hyvinvointia, palautumista, yhteisöllisyyttä ja osa suomalaista elämäntapaa. ❤️‍🔥

🇫🇮 Tämä ei ole vain Saunaseuran aloite. Tämä on koko Suomen aloite saunomisen puolesta.
Nyt tarvitaan mukaan kaikki saunayrittäjät, saunojat ja muut tukijat.
