Mark your calendars for summer and fall 2026 events with Teaching for Change. See links in bio for event registration and other announcements.

On August 13, author Dave Zirin will be in conversation with Jessica A. Rucker to introduce a new biography of Howard Zinn called The People’s Historian: The Outsized Life of Howard Zinn. Written by The Nation Magazine journalist Dave Zirin, it will be published by Penguin Random House. Zirin is also the author of A People’s History of Sports in the United States, which was a part of the Zinn-curated People’s History series at The New Press.

The fourth annual Social Justice Curriculum Fair is an opportunity for D.C. area educators to connect in person while exploring curriculum aligned with various social justice themes. Coordinated in partnership with DCAESJ working groups, this fair will feature classroom resources from the Zinn Education Project and Social Justice Books, and is designed for pre-K-12 educators. There will also be opportunities to network with D.C. area education organizations at exhibit tables.

ALL attendees will receive professional development credits.

On Wednesday, September 23, Central American authors, Anna Lapera, John Manuel Arias, Diana Rojas, Ana Patricia Rodríguez, and Jared Lemus, will join us for a third year to celebrate Central American voices.

The tenth annual Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°) Teach-In will bring together hundreds of teachers from across the country to Washington, D.C. to enlighten and inform teaching about American Indians. Through interactive workshops, teachers will explore classroom-ready lessons for K-12 students that center on Native voices and histories. Participants will learn how to bring the museum’s exhibitions and the resource-rich NK360° education initiative into their teaching practices.

The tenth annual Teach-In, hosted by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in partnership with Teaching for Change, will highlight the connections between Indigenous history and current cultural sovereignty efforts.

Just a few days after the 2026 World Cup kicked off, on Monday, June 15, 2026, Teaching for Change co-sponsored Busboys and Poets' Red Card: The 2026 World Cup, Sportswashing, and the FIFA Greed Machine, a conversation between author Jules Boykoff and Dave Zirin.

In his book and through the discussion, Boykoff demonstrates that it is possible to simultaneously treasure the skills and athleticism displayed on the pitch while lamenting their exploitation by malevolent powerbrokers for whom love of the game means nothing next to turning a buck or harvesting prestige.

This timely moment offered insights to stay aware of as the World Cup continued. In a call to action, Boykoff noted "Back the activists and those in host cities." An opportunity to not just keep our activism on the World Cup, but also as the Olympics arrives in Los Angeles in 2028.

The FREE Beyond Heroes & Holidays Series hosted by Busboys and Poets and Teaching for Change, in the D.C. metro area. This series is designed for everyone who loves to learn. Organizers and teachers from @escuelitasonbuhi and @atl.are joined our compas at XITO in Tucson to dive into decolonial ethnic studies teaching using XITO’s TIAHUI and @liberated_ethnic_studies models.

Escuelitas and ATL ARE organizer @buhi_educator gave a workshop to discuss the ethnic studies of the Global U.S. South framework that guides his own and the Escuelitas teaching model. He also modeled @teach_change’s Teaching Central America’s lessons and resources to build solidarity with Central Americans and the Central American studies movement. Escuelitas organizer @hopeless_ro.mantic shared about their EscueliTaxi transportation network for our neighbors that embodies the ethos of mutual aid and community support behind Escuelitas.

The ATL ARE crew got to meet with our compas from @raza_educators_la chapter to share wisdom and grow our LA-ATL connection. We are developing ourselves as ethnic studies educators, organizers, and we are building solidarity across the continent and across difference for collective liberation.

#tdih On June 27, 1954, democratically elected Guatemalan president Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán was deposed in a CIA-sponsored coup to protect the profits of the United Fruit Company.

Árbenz was replaced by decades of brutal U.S.-backed regimes who committed widespread torture and genocide.

Wonder why many Central Americans are making the most excruciating decision of all -- to leave their home and travel at great risk to the United States? There is a direct throughline from U.S. foreign policy and fossil fuel extraction -- including this coup and more recently the climate crisis.

To understand why families from Central America are leaving their homeland to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, we need to look to the history and current U.S. foreign policy in the region.

On #tdih in 1980 a general strike was held in El Salvador against the death squads. The U.S. government helped fund Salvadoran police forces.

Questioned about the nature of the aid in a Senate hearing, Under Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs Elliott Abrams said,

"I think that government has earned enough trust, as I think we have earned enough trust, not to be questioned, frankly, about exporting torture equipment. But I would certainly be in favor of giving it to them if they want it."

Harpers Ferry is not just a historic site. It is a place where the struggle over freedom, slavery, democracy, and public memory still speaks to us today. On Juneteenth, we’re gathering at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park to defend public history and the full American story. As the Trump administration censors history and science while hollowing out the agencies responsible for protecting them, we are coming together to say: public lands should tell the full American story, not a whitewashed version of it. Join America 433+ and coalition partners for a public teach-in, family-friendly activities, postcards to elected officials, and a call to protect public memory.

Black history. Indigenous history. LGBTQ+ history. Slavery. Climate science. Labor history. Civil rights. These stories are not optional. They are part of the American story. We will not let them be erased from our national parks.
