The 108th Little International brought out the hard work, growth, and passion of Agricultural and Extension Education students both in and out of the ring. 🐖📚

Each student walked away with something different, but all of these experiences are helping shape them into future educators.

Jesse (‘29) earned Reserve Champion Swine Fitter, showing her attention to detail and dedication to preparing animals at a high level.🐷

Paige (‘29) was named Champion Amateur Swine Showman, highlighting her confidence and strong presence in the ring.🐽

Maddy (‘29) competed in the professional sheep division and took on the challenge of preparing a yearling sheep in less than a month. Through it all, she pushed herself outside of her comfort zone and found a lot of joy in helping and teaching others along the way.🐑

Lauren (‘29) competed in the amateur sheep division, where she learned patience and resilience while working with a ewe that challenged her. She also found one of her favorite parts of the experience was the community and friendships built along the way.🐏

Abigale (‘27) competed in the professional beef division and deepened her experience with cattle that she will be able to apply in her future classroom.🐮

Kathryne (‘28) earned Champion Professional Horse Showman, showing a high level of discipline and skill in the arena.🐴

Heather (‘27) was named Champion Amateur Sheep Showman. As someone newer to working with sheep, she gained real-world experience that will help her support future students with livestock and SAE projects.🐑

From long practices to show day success, these students are building skills that go far beyond the ring and into their future classrooms. Their experiences are not only impactful during their time at Penn State, but will continue to influence the students they teach in the future.👩‍🏫 by @teachagpsu

Earlier this month, seven Penn State AEE students stepped into the role of counselor at Shaver’s Creek Outdoor School, gaining firsthand experience in informal, hands-on education with nearly 100 fifth-grade students. 🏕️☀️

As one student reflected, their role went beyond leading activities, it was about “creating a space where students felt supported enough to try new things” while using nature as a teaching tool. Another shared how the experience reinforced the importance of “‘learning by doing’ and hands-on activities” to help students truly understand how systems work.🌻🍄‍🟫

Experiences like this will stick with these students and shape how they’ll show up in their own classrooms and the kinds of learning spaces they want to create.👩🏼‍🏫🌿

The Agricultural and Extension Education program proudly recognizes Ms. Sarah Beaver as our Student of the Month! 🌟

Sarah is currently pursuing her degree in Agricultural and Extension Education at Penn State University, on track to graduate in the spring of 2027. Originally from Eldred, PA, she is a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School, where she was an active member of the Otto-Eldred FFA Chapter.

During her time at Penn State, Sarah has been highly involved across campus. She is an active member of UPUA, Faculty Senate, Ag Advocates, Ag Student Council, FFA Alumni and Supporters, Coaly Society, and Alpha Tau Alpha. She has also gained valuable experience as a Global Teach Ag Network Intern.

Sarah’s passion for agriculture centers around advocacy, beef production, and educating youth about the industry. She has expanded her knowledge through unique study abroad experiences, including the GOALs Program Cohort 3 in Belize, where she learned about agricultural education, and ANSC 399 in Brazil, where she explored beef production systems.🌎

On campus, Sarah’s favorite class has been AEE 204N, and when she’s not busy with academics or involvement, you can find her enjoying a meal at The Field Burger and Tap. A fun fact about Sarah is that she is related to General James A. Beaver, for whom Beaver Stadium is named!

Looking ahead to student teaching, Sarah is most excited about gaining more experience working with students and spending time in the classroom.

Please join us in congratulating Ms. Beaver on this well-deserved recognition! 👏 by @teachagpsu

Spring break at Penn State is more than just time off. For our students, it is an opportunity to travel, learn, and experience agriculture in new and meaningful ways. Experiences like these are a common part of the Penn State Teach Ag journey, giving students hands on learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Sarah Beaver ’27, an Agricultural and Extension Education major, traveled to Brazil through ANSC 399: Beef Production in Brazil. During her trip, she visited six cattle operations, explored agricultural organizations, and experienced Brazilian food, music, and culture, gaining a deeper understanding of global beef production along the way.✈️🐂

Abigale Bricker ’27, also an Agricultural and Extension Education major, traveled with the Penn State Dairy Science Club to the Pacific Northwest, where she toured four of the top dairy facilities in Oregon, visited three creameries, and explored the Seattle and Oregon area.🍦🌲

From beef production in Brazil to dairy innovation in the U.S., our students are taking every opportunity to expand their knowledge and see agriculture from new perspectives. 🌎🐄 taken in Around The World by @teachagpsu

The Agricultural and Extension Education program proudly recognizes Mr. Ben Torrey as our March Student of the Month! 🧑‍🏫✏️

Ben is currently in his third year at Penn State University and is student teaching at Manheim Central High School under the mentorship of Mrs. Heather Anderson. Originally from Genesee, PA, Ben is a graduate of Northern Potter Junior Senior High School. During high school, he was an active member of the Headwaters FFA and went on to serve as a Pennsylvania FFA State Officer. 🤝

Ben began his Penn State journey at the Penn State DuBois campus, where he was involved with the Wildlife Society. Now at University Park, he continues to be highly engaged across campus as a member of Block and Bridle, Mock Trial, FFA Alumni and Supporters, and the Forestry Club.

His agricultural interests are wide-ranging and include dairy and beef production, maple production, agricultural mechanics, forestry, wildlife, and show stock. Agriculture runs deep in Ben’s roots as his family has owned and operated their farm in Potter County for more than 100 years, and he proudly represents the sixth generation of his family’s farming legacy. 🌾

Outside the classroom and barn, Ben enjoys spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, trap shooting, and backpacking. He also enjoys showing livestock, participating in fantasy football, and playing pool and darts.

Join us on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025 from 9–10 AM as Ashley Brubaker presents her final presentation!
 Zoom link: https://psu.zoom.us/j/4294553550

Ashley will be student teaching at Athens High School with cooperating teacher Ms. Sarabeth Alderfer.

Ashley wants to be an ag teacher because...

“Agriculture provides almost all of the commodities we use in our daily lives. Teaching young adults where their food, clothes, and housing come from is not only important, but crucial. Growing the minds of students is one of my greatest aspirations.”

A few of Ashley’s accomplishments include being an Ag Science Student Council Member, Delaware Valley University Softball Team member, Collegiate FFA member, multiple scholarship recipient, Keystone and American FFA Degree recipient, and a Dean’s List student.

We’re excited to support her as she takes this next step in agricultural education. by @teachagpsu

Meet Dr. Laura Rice, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Education here at Penn State.
For Dr. Rice joining the faculty is a true Homecoming. She's a proud Pennsylvanian and Penn State alum who’s excited to give back to the program that shaped her.
Her favorite part of agricultural education is the people. She loves helping future and current ag teachers grow their confidence, connect theory to practice, and become impactful leaders in their communities. This semester, she’s especially excited to teach AEE 412: Methods of Teaching Agriculture, where students get hands-on experience designing lessons and refining their teaching style.
A fun fact about Dr. Rice is that she played the trumpet in high school and had the honor of performing TAPS for her local American Legion for four years, a meaningful way to give back to her community.
Welcome back to Penn State , Dr. Rice!

Our AEE seniors played a central role in making the second annual Plant Yourself in Ag Day a success.

Over the past months, they planned activities, coordinated logistics, and partnered with Penn State faculty to translate cutting-edge research into hands-on learning experiences for high school students.

From drones to robotics, water quality, apple science, and precision dairy, the seniors helped bring complex agricultural concepts to life while guiding 175 students from 12 schools through interactive workshops. This experience is giving them real-world teaching practice and preparing them for their future student teaching placements.

A special thank you to the faculty and researchers who partnered with our seniors to bring their research to the students, helping to create engaging and impactful experiences that connect science and education. by @teachagpsu
