Appreciate @theoregonian for covering the pain small businesses across my Metro district are experiencing as a result of reckless ICE activity — places like La Imperial Bakery, La Mixteca Oaxaca, Su Casa Supermercado, and Paisanos Plaza.

These family-owned businesses have deep roots in our community. They’ve created jobs, carried culture, and brought life to our neighborhoods for years. Today, many of them are facing devastating losses — some up to 40% — causing lay-offs and uncertainty for the viability of their business. All as fear and federal overreach ripple through our streets.

As a Metro Councilor and a leader that grew up in this community, I see the human side of these policies every day.
 We can’t afford to look away from the economic fallout that our area will be experiencing for many years to come. This is all hyper local. Unfortunately, the White House has abandoned immigrant communities and has resorted to a sick approach to appease their anti-immigrant, nationalist base.

🚨 ICE is here — right now — in Hillsboro and nearby. These raids are becoming more frequent, more aggressive, and more terrifying. We need to be vigilant to protect each other.

One of the people taken this week was a maintenance worker at a Metro affordable housing site — here legally — who vanished mid-shift. His cart and tools were left behind on the sidewalk.

I can’t believe this is where we are. I’m carrying my passport every time I leave the house, I know many of my constituents are to even though they have legal status. And we cannot be bystanders while our neighbors are snatched from our community.

Our rights and resources are critical to amplify right now.

I am honored and excited to share that I am running for Metro Council President. ⚡️🌲

I love Portland Metro with every fiber of my being. I believe we live in the greatest place in the world — and I believe our best days are still ahead. Together, we can forge a Greater Portland where everyone belongs, where young families can plant roots, where elders thrive in their communities, where Oregon businesses boom, and where we build the big things that change lives for generations.

My agenda is simple: to grow a region where anything is possible. That begins with reframing how we approach our economy, our governance, and our ambition.

I am ready to bring urgency and vision to deliver the outcomes our region needs: affordable housing and pathways to homeownership, clean energy that powers the future economy and the jobs that come with it, infrastructure that meets the needs of the 21st century, preserving our clean air and water for generations to come, and an unapologetic commitment to shared prosperity.

As a new father, I’m seeing our region with new eyes. I know the status quo cannot deliver the future my daughter, your children, and our grandchildren deserve.

I’m proud to launch this campaign with the support of more than 100 endorsements from elected officials, business owners, community leaders, and people who love this region.

Today, Metro Council approved over $26 million in parks and nature investments, funding 51 projects across greater Portland.

Nature is what makes our region special. Ask people what they love most about living here, and they say “nature,” not just the wild places far away, but the nature we get to enjoy close to home.

This funding comes from the Parks and Nature bond voters approved in 2019, and so much of it was shaped by community members themselves: neighbors who voted on which projects to fund, organizers who brought culture and healing into these spaces, residents who showed up to protect the land they call home. Our Community Choice Grants process was one of the largest participatory budgeting cycles in the country, proof that when we trust communities to lead, they deliver.

The Dolores is open in Hillsboro, and 67 affordable homes now have families in them, real people who can finally afford to live in the region they work and raise their kids in.

We didn’t get there by accident either. Metro used dollars from our affordable housing bond, which is on track to deliver more than 5,600 homes region-wide, our site-acquisition program, which identifies the best locations for dense, affordable housing before land gets too expensive to build on, and 20 long-term rent vouchers through Supportive Housing Services for people experiencing extreme poverty. Three tools, working together, to make sure this housing actually stays affordable for the people who need it most.

Thank you to Hacienda CDC, the City of Hillsboro, and Washington County for building this with us.

As your Metro Council President, I will keep working to fix the most pressing issues our region is facing. This is what greater Portland does when we decide to fix something.

I toured Fora Health to see our behavioral health and recovery system up close. This is what it looks like when people get the support they need to exit homelessness for good.

Oregon ranks near the bottom nationally for behavioral health and recovery access. In Multnomah County, 372 people died while experiencing homelessness in 2024, and unintentional overdose was the leading cause. These numbers are a policy choice that I am not comfortable accepting.

Recovery and transitional shelter is one of the biggest gaps in our system. We don’t have enough beds for people who need intensive support, especially those managing substance use and behavioral health conditions at the same time. That’s why we’re coordinating investments across our three counties to close that gap.

This is hard work, and it’s not fast. But it’s the work. More to come.

🚨 We can’t let ICE killing people become normal. I refuse to let it be normal.

Rest in peace, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. A husband who spent 35 years building homes for other families’ American dreams, killed by ICE in Houston yesterday. His family deserves real answers.

And it pains me that ICE activity in Oregon is picking up again. If you see something that could be ICE activity, report it to the hotline: 888-622-1510. And follow and support the organizations doing this work, PIRC and Oregon for All.

Toured the future site of the Portland Botanical Garden, and the videos genuinely do not do it justice. A first-of-its-kind vision for the city of Portland, years in the making by a small team of Oregon botanists and conservationists. Right on the banks of the Willamette in North Portland. This is the kind of big bet we need to be making to revitalize and revamp this region.

🏳️‍🌈🌈 Got to interview the legendary @dr_poisonwaters at Beaverton Pride yesterday.

We talked about what we love about this city and what we want to see in the years ahead. Lately I have been thinking a lot about the future thanks to Metro’s Future Vision project, and there is no better person to have that conversation with than an icon who has seen and shaped so much of Greater Portland’s story. 🌈
