Waiting to see a physio? Here’s what you can do at home in the meantime. 🦵

TENDON PAIN: start with isometrics
Why? In athletes with patellar tendinopathy, isometric holds gave immediate pain relief (Vang & Niznik, 2020), and in one study the pain-relieving effect lasted up to 45 minutes afterwards (Rio et al., 2015).

PFP: load management is key
Think low load, high volume. In a study of 151 adolescents with PFP, 86% reported improvement at 12 weeks with a program built around activity modification and load management (Rathleff et al., 2019).

My favourite place to start is the bike. Cycling can keep you moving and build aerobic fitness without the high-impact spikes of running (Sandbakk et al., 2021).

If any of these make things worse: stop, rest, and come in to see a physio.

Not sure which one sounds like you? Book in for an assessment. 📌 Save this for later.

Can an app replace your physio? What about AI? 👀

Ricky breaks it down!

Generic programs can give you exercises.
Apps can track your reps.
AI can give you suggestions.

But none of them can actually assess YOU.

Physiotherapy is why does this hurt, what’s actually going on, and what do you, as an individual, need?

🎥 Our amazing student Ricky’s got more to say on this one. 👆🏼

👋 Hi! I figured it’s mid summer and it’s a good time for a reintroduction of the Team.
I’m Lindsey, co-owner of Versa Movement Collective and not a robot 🤖.
😂

By day, you’ll usually find me at the front desk booking, rebooking, billing and chatting with our wonderful clients. The rest of the time, I’m behind the scenes making sure the clinic is running on all cylinders.

If you call and we don’t answer right away, we’re probably with a client, on another call, or we’ve stepped away for a quick minute.

And here’s a little behind-the-scenes secret… when you get a text from Versa, it’s usually me, sometimes Kristine but it’s never a robot!
No AI pretending to be us, only coffee fuelled humans who genuinely care about our clients. ☕️🥰

Thanks for trusting us with your care and we hope everyone is having a beautiful summer ☀️

🎉 STUDENT TAKEOVER 🎉

We’re excited to introduce Sydney, a 2nd year student from the U of A. We feel lucky that she chose VersaMC to do her placement and we are stoked to have her!
👋

My name is Sydney and I am a 2nd year student from the University of Alberta Physical Therapy program. I decided to pursue a career in physical therapy because of my interest in anatomy and exercise. I enjoy working with people, and love helping patients regain their ability to participate in the activities that are meaningful to them.

When I am not at school, I can be found in the dance studio teaching my young competitive dancers. With over 20 years of dance experience, I find joy in sharing my knowledge and fostering a supportive environment for my students to grow both as athletes and artists.✨

Student Takeover, Part 2 🚨🚨
MScPT Student Matt here again! 🏌️

This week we are going to swing into your timeline and break down the infinite wisdom of my favourite golf coach Chubbs Peterson, slide by slide 🤓. Chubbs definitely knew his stuff in recognizing the best physical qualities that help prevent common golf injuries to the low back, elbow and wrist!

Slide 2: Golfers who displayed better overhead squats saw more controlled lumbar extension in the impact area and reduced shear forces at the oft-injured S4-S5-L1 area.
(*1*) DOI: 10.3390/s24041252

Slide 3: Golfers with back pain were seen to have statistically significant reductions in lead hip internal rotation and hip external rotation. Think of this as twisting to your left and right on your lead leg, respectively. (*2*) DOI: 10.1177/0363546503261729

Slide 4: (3*) DOI: 10.26773/smj.251015
Current literature around throwing athletes likes to use the concept of “proximal to distal” sequencing to explain how speed is generated in the hips and core and makes its way out to the hands and club. Restrictions in hip mobility means that forces are not smoothly transferred out to the extremities, often resulting in injury to the elbow (and shoulder). (4*) DOI: 10.1016/j.jse.2023.10.009

Slide 5: Tilting the thumbs downwards is a movement that us physios call ulnar deviation. Under high swing speeds this can put stress on cartilage structures near the pinky side of the hand (e.g. TFCC) as well as thumb tendons (e.g. De Quervain’s syndrome). As mentioned in the slide, loss of posture in the downswing is a major contributor to having to ulnar deviate to large degrees. What contributes to loss of posture? You guessed it-hip mobility, core strength and glute strength.
(*5*) TPI Manual 1

For those of you that made it to the end of the caption, I’ll be posting a more in-depth breakdown of this week’s post and next to the VersaMC website via a blog!

Stay swinging!

Runners, are your glutes engaging effectively? 🍑

Weak glute muscles can lead to knee and hip discomfort, affecting your overall performance. To enhance stability and ensure smoother movement during your runs, incorporate specific activation exercises before each session.

Prioritizing glute health is essential for injury prevention and improved mobility!

🚨🚨Student Takeover! 🚨🚨

Hi everyone, it’s Matthaus, a 2nd year MScPT student at VersaMC! While I played many sports as a teenager/young adult, I decided to take golf seriously at the age of 19, a journey that has led me to play in multiple national championships since. I’ll be diving into how physiotherapy ties in with ensuring you have the physical capacity needed to make an efficient and powerful swing, while minimizing the risk of injury. 👊
While I can’t give you Rory McIlroy’s silky swing (or Tommy Fleetwood’s silky hair 💇), I can give you the tools to start looking at the golf swing as an athlete! 🤾

We all want to hit bombs, but it’s hard to drive it past your buddies when you are injured! 🤕 Next week, I’ll be breaking down on how PT can help identify and modify risk factors that can predispose one to injuries during the golf swing (hint, hint….both Evan and Mat are TPI certified…😉). Where do most golfing injuries originate from, you may ask? Short Answer: it’s complicated (just like this stupid yet wonderful game….🤬😀🤬)

Check out our story today for a couple quiz questions that will get you thinking! 🧠

Stay tuned-in two weeks I’ll be dropping some ideas on movements you can incorporate into your fitness regimen to become a better golf athlete and hit pain-free bombs more often! I’ll also be providing some very simple golf-specific tidbits you can look at in your own game to stay healthy and in the swing of things this upcoming season. Don’t worry, I won’t pollute your head with a billion swing tips, I’ll leave that to your regular foursome. 🏌️🏌️🏌️🏌️.

For those of you who want to get academic with me, a full breakdown of everything will be posted in a blog to the Versa MC website. 🤓 🤓

Stay swinging!
-Matt
