a few days on the west coast. what a time. sitting under voices that formed me when i was younger. conversations with twenty-somethings that challenged me to the core. old friends. new friends. family. church. long drives. the 405. chicken wings with people i used to eat chicken wings with in birmingham. thinking a lot about what it means to carry a message. about the environments that form us. the people who give us a shot, the people who correct us, the people who let us get things wrong and keep growing anyway. thinking about my own twenties. the things i was so sure of. the things i’m still trying to understand. had a moment in church where i wrote three words in my notebook. ‘this is me.’ realising that you can believe God and still have questions about what on earth He’s doing. that not every open door needs to be walked through immediately. that you can make plans and allow God to tell you no. came to give something. received far more. increasingly interested in what we’re building in people. still figuring plenty of it out. i’ve got more story now. a first project out of this office, and a special one. rebranding a church is a strange job when you think about it. you’re trying to give language and form to something whose central message hasn’t changed in two thousand years, whilst acknowledging that the culture receiving that message has changed massively. theology, people, place, history, children, coffee, typography, hospitality, websites, sunday mornings and, somewhere amongst all of that, the Holy Spirit. over the last few months, i got to work with glow, a church in the north east, on a full rebrand. i spent time with the team in their world, listening, asking questions, walking around, watching how people gathered and trying to understand what was already true about glow. i researched what was happening across church and culture, then deliberately wandered outside the category into hotels, restaurants and hospitality brands to think about welcome, belonging and why people choose to stay. eventually, i landed on the idea at the heart of it all: holy ordinary. not a tagline, but a way of seeing glow, rooted in the belief that God has always had a habit of taking the ordinary stuff of human life, bread, wine, water, tables, homes, meals, people, and filling it with significance. from there, we built the brand world. i care about the local church far too much to simply make it look good. i want our churches to understand the moment they’re in, know what they carry and communicate it with clarity and conviction, whilst still recognising themselves in what we make. some further thoughts on substack @sanibona.co. taken in Newton Aycliffe by @tebompanza

wild old szn. starting again. early mornings. running around west london. on the road preaching again. writing. finding new tables. dreaming again. learning that friendship in your thirties requires far more intention than anybody warned us about. that i really like building things. brands. ideas. words. people. learning to pay attention to the ordinary stuff. to leave some margin. to call people back. to be interruptible. to enjoy what’s happening now rather than constantly preparing for what happens next. learning that fatherhood rearranges your ambitions. that london is expensive. that there are things worth doing slowly. that God is sometimes doing his deepest work in the bits of your life you would rather hurry through. trying not to rush what He seems perfectly happy to take His time with. learning that not every season needs a name while you’re living it. some things make more sense looking backwards. taken in London, United Kingdom by @tebompanza
