Siempre me a gustado explorar.

Cuidense.☮️❤️💪🏼

26 months ago, I couldn't walk 4 blocks. I just did 102🚴🏽miles (175km)!

11/05/24... Election Day. The destination: Newport Beach.
🙏🏼To the cycling friends who gave me tips on my first #CenturyRide (& on a mountain bike cabrones!💪🏼). They told me it'd be easier in a group so, of course, I wanted to do it the hard way & do it solo.🤪

Towards the end, I heard the election results. My mental health, sideways.
The last 30 miles, it was cold, my power bank was dead, no music to accompany me. I thought how 60% of the USA voted against me, an immigrant.

I thought of how 2024 is the 31st year in a row that I donate the majority of my free time to the community. I started pouring back into Black & Brown communities in 1994. I've been criticized for giving it all away for free. Should I have been more selfish?

That some of the same Black & Brown folks, in my own community had voted against me. People whom I'd probably helped. Should I shut down the @wattsrunningclub & stop giving back? All these thoughts flirted with my common sense.

I decided, I'll always stay true to me. No matter the cost. I will power through. Who knows what lies ahead.
What I do know is that I've always built communities.
Resistance is just that. Organizing. Around a collective good.
In this case, wellness.
Because maybe someone reading this also can't walk 4 blocks.
Hopefully, someone reading this will realize they can also overcome.
☮️❤️💪🏼

53rd revolution around the sun & can't help but get nostalgic. About who I am. What I've done...

Someone once asked me "what's your legacy, you didn't have kids?"
Me: "I don't believe that your kids are the only legacy you leave behind."

My legacy will forever be my impact!
It started in 1994 & this is the 33rd year in a row. I never did any of this to get famous, become rich or farm likes.

That people might not remember me, but they'll remember that some random stranger on the street greeted them warmly. All the kids I coached will remember that they felt seen & encouraged no matter their skill level. They turned into adults, hopefully paying that forward. They'll remember that they were sitting in the rain in their wheelchair but I pushed that chair to their home to recharge their battery. They'll remember that I tended to a youth, the victim of a car accident. They'll remember all the free classes I gave in the community for free in ESL, Computers & Citizenship. They'll remember feeling new & alone at one of the tech conferences or meetups I used to organize when I went up to warmly greet & welcome them.

When I'm no longer here, I pray that people remember all my imperfections. And that, in spite of that, I still showed up for the people. That they remember how much I loved the people of LA. That they remember how proud I am to be born on a humble ranch in Zacatecas, Mexico. 🇲🇽💪🏽

I secretly pray, that if I ever did something good for you that you don't thank me. That when I'm no longer here, you thank my mom. That you tell my nieces & nephews about it. That when you remember me, you do something kind for a stranger.

Today I'm grateful for still being here when I was very close to not. That my loved ones are well. That I get so much love.🥰
🙏🏼Thank YOU ALL for enriching MY life!🙏🏽 by @techivist3

As we age, we lose muscle mass year after year. To offset that, we need to increase our protein intake. More so if you're trying to build muscle after age 50.

Once we wake up, we should be re-hydrating first since we lose much water overnight. The next thing you ingest should be protein, say for breakfast. Your tastes will vary but a protein shake, Greek yogurt, boiled eggs or lean meats will do the trick.

This is my preferred breakfast.
Put the chia seeds in the Greek yogurt overnight.
In the morning, add protein powder.
Whip it like you're beating an egg so there's no chalky taste from the protein powder.
Add blueberries & your fruits of choice.
Here I'm also experimenting adding ground cinnamon & honey.
Voila! Super healthy breakfast that'll keep you full well into lunch which means no snack cravings.
Delicious & nutritious! 😋💪🏽

The worst thing you can do once you wake up is eat/drink any processed sugar as it increases insulin resistance. Things like that sugar in your morning coffee or that pan dulce are terrible but I'll get into that at a future date. by @techivist3

The 2nd Annual (unofficial) SCALE 5K during @socallinuxexpo was a HUGE success!

Thank you to all who woke up early in the morning to do their movement with us. We had a couple groups & we took them on a cool route that introduced folks to interesting parts of Old Town Pasadena & near the Rose Bowl.

Last year, we had 6 attendees. This year we had 15 attendees. At this rate, if my math is right, we'll have 38 attendees in 2027.

Looking forward to seeing y'all next year as we introduce bigger & better things to this event. But you'll have to be in attendance to see what we have in store.

March 5-8, 2026: I go to other tech conferences for the conf. I go to @socallinuxexpo to see all my friends.

SCALE is the best tech conference in the world (and, yes, I've been to & organized many myself). Beyond that, the #OpenSource community is so embracing so it feels more like a family reunion.

This year, I was blessed to see so many ex-colleagues & folks I've met along my tech journey. I even got to see a few folks who used to attend the tech meetups & conferences I used to organize (& I stopped doing that in 2013!). So many great presentations & lots of formal & informal chats around AI as it permeates so much of our industry.

While SCALE 23x is a wrap, can't help but look forward to SCALE 24x in 2027. I look forward to seeing more of your bright & beautiful faces next year.

We did the 2nd Annual (unofficial) SCALE 5K (but thats for another post.

On the heels of Trump's comments re: the USA Women's Hockey Team, I'll share a story I wasn't planning on sharing.

It's Super Bowl Sunday & I'm excited to see the Bad Bunny Halftime Show just like all the world. I'm in Whittier at the Pizza Hut on Hadley & Whittier. I decided to go pickup our pizzas instead of having them delivered thinking we'd actually get our food on time.

It's packed inside that little square box, maybe 20 people deep. Everyone is stressed, customers, delivery drivers & customers alike. A guy comes in, 25'ish Latino male. He gets his pie, checks it & immediately is super upset. He yells at the cashier "WTF I was here earlier & my order is still wrong." He was VERY upset. But he keeps seething & then bursts out "y'all need to get some men working back there so you can get this shiz right!"

I wasn't ok with him saying that. That's when I noticed
it was an all-female crew working. I'm like 8 feet away from him & this is how it went.

ME: C'mon man don't fkin do that! They're doing their best and don't need some foo telling them that they need a man to complete their job!"
FOO: <glares at me like he wants to fight>
FOO: WTF is it to you!?
ME: You're yelling at them condescendingly!
FOO: AND?!
ME: And, you I both know that if your sister or mom was working here, you'd have a huge problem with some foo talking to them like this!
FOO: <glares again, gets his pie & leaves all pissed>

When he left, people started talking about it & folks thanked me. I asked them why were they thanking me when they didn't speak up?
An older Latina lady got her food & quietly came over to thank me as she left.

I don't share this for props. It's who I've always been. I share this because this only fractures our communities.

I simply ask y'all to check your homies if you see them acting like a foo. You shouldn't need to have a daughter or sister to act humanely. I know it's not the popular thing to do. It's easier to laugh along or stay quiet. Have these conversations.

These things happen in sports.
This is about more than sports, though, it's about community.
We're raised to be protectors & that's ok.

Thank you for reading this.
Stay up. ☮️❤️💪🏼 by @techivist3
