I walked into this storefront art installation on Grand Street NYC one day and met the artist, Rutherford Chang. He called it We Buy White Albums and I thought it was uniquely brilliant. I see that Rutherford passed away at only 45 years old. Very sad. taken in SoHo, New York by @tedshutt56

Since we live so nearby I figured I should drive over and visit the Beach Boys home in Hawthorne, CA. The house was in a modest neighborhood of very small houses and it's apparent that the Wilson family lived in a kind of polite suburban poverty. The demo for their first song, Surfin', was recorded at the house, in the garage, in Sept 1961 (you can hear it here: https://youtu.be/_Ifd58hLhIU?si=tqWebzdmHL2pru9z) and I can imagine how thrilled the family were to have found a hit formula that would generate some income - at least until the rock & roll and surfing "fads" disappeared. I can also imagine how alarming it was for them when Brian began moving away from this formula, and how hard it must have been for him to stand his ground.

The house was torn down in the mid-80s during construction of the 105 Century freeway. This simple landmark is all that remains which is a shame. The house could have been turned into a museum, the garage set up with their original instruments, mics and recording equipment.
