The week after stepping off the TEDx stage…no words 🫠

I’ve spent much of my life performing, but this stretched me in a completely different way.

Months of preparation. Fourteen and a half minutes on stage. And a whole lot of nerves, courage and emotion.

Sometimes the moments that look incredible from the outside take more out of us than anyone realises.

I’m proud I did it. And I’m still taking it all in. ❤️

For every artist and creative facing something that scares you a little: courage doesn’t always feel courageous while you’re doing it.

turns out i had a few things to say 🎤 i've spent years noticing a recurring tension in journalism and in the journalists i studied for my research. so i decided to put the two together. the tricky part? making academic research digestible for those who don't want to spend hours reading academic research. you never know what will stick with an audience so the best part was hearing from people afterwards who said they saw themselves in the talk 🫶🏽 looking forward to sharing more...once legally permitted to spill #tedx #atl #storytelling @tedxbuckheadave taken in Atlanta, GA by @tedxbuckheadave

This is what TEDx looked like from the inside.

Not just the 14½ minutes on the red circle.

Months of writing, cutting, rewriting, rehearsing, coaching, practising — and thinking about it when I probably should have been thinking about something else.

Then the morning came.

I woke up, pulled the blankets around me and honestly didn’t want to get out. I knew what I had to do that day — and I already couldn’t wait to crawl back under them again that night.

I was ready. Really ready.
I was also nervous.
And so were the others! 🫠

Behind the beautiful clothes, red carpet and smiling faces was a room full of women who cared enormously about what they were about to say.

Then I walked onto that red circle and spoke for 14½ minutes about creativity and the hidden cost of waiting to be chosen.

There was cheering afterwards. Hugging. Dancing. Ridiculousness.

I DID IT. 😭❤️

Today I gave my TEDx talk.

This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever chosen to do. Not because anyone made me. Not because I had to.

I said yes to something that scared me — and then spent months becoming the person who could walk onto that red circle and do it.

And this? This is what the other side looked like. 😂

Exhausted. Relieved. Proud. Very, very grateful.

Sometimes courage is simply choosing the thing you could have avoided… and staying with it all the way to the end.

Tomorrow, I step onto the TEDx stage.

A few months ago, I submitted an application alongside more than 900 others. I was selected to share a Big Idea, and I have spent every week since then learning how to say it well.

It started with pen and paper because I’m old school. A little red notebook went everywhere with me: the clinic, flights, my kitchen counter, the sleep rooms between overnight shifts. I filled pages with fragments written in margins, crossed them out, and started again until the words finally came together.

Then came the drafts. And the rewrites. And the rewrites of the rewrites. Each version asked me to cut what was comfortable and keep only what was true.

Coaching was mandatory, so I rearranged my ER shifts to make every session. Some days I came off a 12-hour night shift, a 2-hour drive, a 2-hour flight and went straight into rehearsal and would be up for 24 hours. It was worth every adjustment.

To my coach and Soror, Catina @tinamarie1913 , thank you for pushing me to find the clearest version of my message and for believing it deserved a stage. For leaning in to every word even when it was the 50-11th time you heard it.

To @modexstudio , thank you for building a community where speakers can develop their talks with honesty, support, and confidence. I did not walk this road alone.

To my friends and family, near and far, thank you in advance. Whether you are in the audience tomorrow or cheering from another city, I feel you with me. Watch party loading…

One day to go. The notebook is closed. The idea is ready.

Tomorrow, I give my TEDx talk. ❤️

And y'all...I am READY.

The rehearsals. The rewrites. The cuts. The research. The “but I really like that part!” followed by “okay fine, cut it.” 😂

All of it brought me here.

And somewhere in the process, the talk got clearer.

So did I.

Tomorrow I get to step onto the TEDxBuckheadAveWomen stage and share an idea I deeply believe in about music, attention, presence and what becomes possible when we learn how to return to ourselves.

There will be groove.

There will be Michael Jackson.

There will definitely be some Detroit in the room. 😂

And I'm going to enjoy every minute.

I've shown you some of the work behind the scenes.

Tomorrow is the part everybody gets to see.

One day away. ❤️

Tomorrow I step onto the TEDx stage to talk about something I’ve seen play out again and again in creative lives:

What happens when we spend too much of our creative life waiting to be chosen?

Waiting for the audition.
The invitation.
The opportunity.
The person who finally says yes.

The danger isn’t only rejection. It’s what can happen to our creative identity while we wait.

20 years ago my friends; @moneycoachmb @cliftonthe4th and I would cookout hop.

Every now and again we would cookout crash, and one time…

We got adopted in DC by a lovely family - the elders and youngins

After food, drink and laughs were speaking and Auntie says - “Let me see your hands”

She proceeds to look at my palm.

“Baby you’re going to be a preacher.”

In my youthful arrogance I laughed her off saying “nahhh” because I had a very conflicting relationship ship with religion at the time.

She replied:

“Oh silly, not like that, your church will look different, you have to speak to people”

Unable to accept the depth of her statement I respectfully changed the conversation.

On the way out she said slyly “Goodbye preacher…”

@tedxbuckheadave you for challenging me to discover how many ways I can capture an idea, a stage, and hopefully some hearts.
