Last year was the first year the word ‘overtourism’ made the dictionary. The press has been filled with stories about the pressure on places like Venice, Amsterdam, and Bali, and often it seems hopeless. However, there are clear solutions ready to be implemented and change doesn't have to take years. Sean Nino of Eco Mantra talks about the changes that can and should be made now by the industry.

How the tourism industry can take responsibility for its environmental footprint: The tourism industry requires huge amount of natural resources and creates a huge environmental footprint. Yet the onus is always on the travel consumer to ‘make better choices’. What does it look like when the hotels step up and commit to taking responsibility for their environmental footprint? This talk explains why the myth that becoming an environmentally responsible hotel is not profit-friendly is totally wrong. Last year was the first year the word ‘overtourism’ made the dictionary. The press has been filled with stories about the pressure on places like Venice, Amsterdam, and Bali, and often it seems hopeless. However, there are clear solutions ready to be implemented and change doesn't have to take years.

What does an economist know about volcanoes? Watch Jackie Pomeroy's talk to find out! Link in bio

Two years ago, the earth began to move under our feet as Bali’s biggest volcano, Mount Agung, started to wake up after half a century of sleep. As the magma pushed up through the rock layers and evacuations of thousands of people happen, Bali made international headlines, often wildly inaccurate and sensationalist. Jackie Pomeroy talks about how her background as an economist and her love of data led her to create an online forum that helped decrease public panic.

@PrehistoricBody Theater is an emerging performance company that presents paleontology and the evolutionary sciences through the medium of contemporary dance-theatre. These productions aim to educate and inspire diverse audiences by presenting an emotionally potent experience.

Under collaborative mentorship with leading paleontologists, artistic director Ari Rudenko generates choreography by mapping the theoretical locomotion and physiology of the featured prehistoric animals onto diverse ensembles of dancers. These animal characters and their evolutionary narratives are brought to life on stage through the evocative use of clay makeup, lighting, sound design, and set installation. Audiences describe their experience of watching Prehistoric Body Theater as “a dive into a mysterious prehistoric past evoking such empathy for all that has come before us“.

“In one of the greatest TED Talks, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talked about The Danger of a Single Story, how things are almost always complex and by focusing on a single story we allow ourselves to ignore the complex periphery, and that can lead us down a wrong and dangerous pathway. I’m pretty sure she wasn’t talking about volcanoes, but that’s very true for volcano watchers, too. I try hard to remind readers that seismic activity isn’t the ONLY factor involved – eruptions are very complicated processes, the experts have a LOT more data than we do (and they actually know how to use it), and even they are extremely reluctant to make predictions.”

In her talk “What does an economist know about volcanoes?”, Jackie Pomeroy shares what she learned after 2 years of volcano watching.
