In late March, I got a phone call I quite literally thought was impossible to receive. My brother called and told me that Tamika was gone. She had died. The devastation was beyond anything I’ve ever felt in my life. And I had 3 days. The 4th day I was making my Birdland Theatre debut. That’s pic #1.

But this post isn’t about that. It’s about her.

Tamika Nicole Christian. Nikki. Mik-Mik. Mika. Known to us by many names. A great connector of the “then and now.” A wondrous, loving, fierce, soft, complicated being. Today, Juneteenth, would’ve been her birthday.

She has been a cornerstone of my life for as long as I remember. I idolized her. The way she held a room, the way even the adults always seemed to respect her. I wanted to be just like her, following behind her, crying until the aunties would inevitably make her take me along. One of my very first memories is being fitted for a cute little pink velvet one-piece that I NEEDED for her grown-up 13th birthday party sleepover at Embassy Suites that I begged to go to. She had to have been PISSED that I got my way, but she got me into my little swimmy and rolled her eyes as I strutted around in front of her too cool friends, thinking I was finally a big girl.

She was my protector. Always holding my hand, and ready to rip anyone’s head off who made me feel an ounce of fear. She showed up for me. Without fail. You move through the world differently when you have that kind of love pouring into you.

The Tamika I came to know was fiercely dedicated to her ideals about life, authenticity, and love. She was journeying through the fire of her own grief, but was sure of finding her peace and purpose, and she believed she wanted others to find theirs, too.

I honor Tamika for the ways she held our family. She has ushered many to the other side. I pray that our ancestors were there to meet and usher her. I hope they welcomed her warmly, that they could offer her the “well done,” she more than earned. I hope she feels the love she wished for. Mostly, I hope that she found the peace she yearned for (continued in comments) by @tee.clay

Creativity for Creativity’s Sake

CONTEXT FOR THE READERS
2025 was a year of forced reset in a lot of ways. Being a creative who relies on their craft for a living can be draining. It happens. I’m not beating myself up about it.

When you’re a creative tho, the creativity ✨has✨ to come out somewhere. When one medium is plugged up, another might be running wild… enter:

✨FAMSGIVING 2025✨
A cozy gathering of people we love in our lil Harlem apartment.

If you know me, you know I LOVE a dinner party. Like, for real. I adore hosting. I delight in pretty things. I cherish pre-loved goodies. Cooking, designing, styling, planning, vibe curation…all of it. That’s my shit.

So planning this gathering became a creative outlet in a time I REALLY needed one. And how absolutely liberating it turned out to be. A project that I could see through beginning to end ✨BUT GET THIS ✨with no goal to advance. Just a moment to share meaningfully and enjoy it; hoping everyone felt like I did something special just for them. Das it.

And I’ll be damned if that’s not part of what we’re all doing anyway🗝️🔐

One 2025 lesson I’m holding onto? It’s amazing how one works when they have vision and simply trust the vision ✨TRUST THE VISION✨ Let it guide you. Even (especially??) when it’s not making you money or “contributing” to your thing. Maybe yall already knew that, but ya girl needed to be reminded.

Infinitely grateful to my loves who didn’t bat a single eyelash when I told them what I wanted to do. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work helping me execute this thing I could see, touch, feel, smell in my heart + soul.

SO. Enjoy these slightly more curated photos of some chaos that brought me life. And if you read all of this, just know you accomplished something today. WHY WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER THERE TAHIRA!?! Well, that’s another story!! Will I post about it? ALWAYS THE QUESTION.
