Using real shadows to make a video game 👾

You control Plato, a little green square, with the simple goal of collecting all the coins. The levels are built by placing real objects in front of the projector. The objects cast shadows onto the screen and a webcam watches those shadows and turns them into collision surfaces in real time, so Plato can run, roll and jump across the shadows of physical objects.

Behind the scenes, the webcam feeds into TouchDesigner, where the shadows are isolated and turned into a low-resolution collision map. The camera, projector and game are mapped to the same space, so the collision map lines up with the shadows you see on the wall. It’s sent live to Godot, turning those shadows into physics geometry that Plato can interact with.

On the island, Tee Ken continues his childlike play. Improvising as he goes, the place became his canvas and the horizon as his guide.

My residency at UNNA felt like a lucid dream. The island, the architecture, the objects, the way light moved through the spaces, it all created the sensation of existing somewhere between dreaming and inhabiting an artwork.

I’ll be forever grateful to my creative idol, dear friend and coach @viancasoleil for collaborating and creating the most beautiful and magical place to think, dream and play 🙏🏼✨🤍

It was wild to create a prototype of the zoetrope in Perth and then fly to Tokyo to direct the shoot of the finished model.
