This carnival was bittersweet for me. I would have given anything to pull on the jersey and be out there playing alongside these women but standing on the sideline as their coach/manager/number one fan ended up being pretty special in a completely different way.

When we started organising this, the men’s committee backed me 100% in putting a women’s team together and giving us the opportunity to compete. There was never a feeling that we were an add on or an afterthought. They backed the women, backed what we wanted to build and gave us the space to make it our own.

And somehow, we ended up with one of the best groups of women I could have asked for.

At the beginning I gave them two rules. They were passed on to me once and have always stuck with me:

1. Back each other. Always. On the field and off it.

2. If you have the ball in your hands, you are the most important person on that field. Make the decision. Back yourself. And if you fuck it up? Everyone reverts straight back to Rule #1.

And they genuinely lived it.

They celebrated each other. They picked each other up. They welcomed the rookies, backed the experienced girls, laughed a LOT, worked hard and created an environment where everyone belonged.

Watching that from the sideline made me incredibly proud, because while rugby matters, that is the team I want us to be known for.

And now to see some of our girls selected to represent Australian Police Rugby Union APRU is just the icing on the cake. 🇦🇺

Congratulations, girls. You earned it.

And to every woman who answered the call and pulled on a Cassowaries jersey, you contributed to this. You helped set the standard for what this team can become.

We’re only at the beginning, but I’m so bloody excited about what we’re building. 🤍🩵

“Slow down, you’re doing fine.
You can’t be everything you want to be before your time.” 🤍

Maybe you need this reminder today: you’re doing better than you think.

We’re so quick to focus on how far we still have to go that we forget to look back at how far we’ve already come. Growth takes time. Healing takes time. Becoming takes time.

You don’t need to have it all figured out yet. Just keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep going. 🌱

6 months ago I was preparing for breast surgery, scared the lump they’d found might be breast cancer. Getting back onto a rugby field felt a long way away.

By the end of June, I finally made my way back and there have already been some moments I’ll never forget.

Captaining my team against my old club. Playing a full game against Wests Prems with current Reds and Wallaroos players coming on at half time and loving every minute of it. Having halfback legends @eli.pilz & Moji Moses give up their time to work with me. Making some BIG tackles, particularly one on the Sunnybank front row in my second game back… IYKYK. 😂

My beautiful friends @shereeyzee and @bscgreg from Body Science giving me the gift of connecting with @luke_curious who said words to the effect of, “It’s either going to challenge you or change you. Challenge is a growth mindset.”That has stuck with me. I’m constantly learning to ask, what can I take from this, and how can I grow from it?

Then somehow, after buying his passing course on a Sunday night before bed, I met Peter Breen from @rugbybricks and ended up having a 1:1 with him. Still not over that one. A highlight for life-Best $7.48 AUD I’ve ever spent!

But what I’m most grateful for is my club @eastsrugbyunion and my team. There have been people who genuinely pulled me through some tough moments while I navigated surgery, recovery and getting my confidence back. Having people who genuinely cheer for you, back you and believe in you is top tier.

Since coming back, I’ve pulled on a Tigers jersey for both our Prems and Seconds and next week our Seconds are playing finals footy.

Six months ago, I was wondering what life might look. Now I’m playing finals and preparing to trial for the @auspolicerugby side next month. Hopefully I can earn myself a jersey and the opportunity to get to Italy next year.

Whatever happens, I’m just bloody grateful to be playing rugby. ❤️

Lastly, HIGHLY recommend @rugbybricks. His lesson was beyond the rugby field, he taught me the process is such an important part. I think that’s probably true for life too.
