**** "Gently revolutionary." Empire

“This is the great modern love story. It is exactly what the world needs right now.” - Jury, Sundance Film Festival 2025.

Written and directed by Rohan Kanawade, Cactus Pears (Sabar Bonda) made history at the Sundance Film Festival, becoming the first Indian fiction feature and the first Marathi-language film to win the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize. The film also went on to receive the Jury Prize at the inaugural SXSW London.
The film opens in UK and Ireland cinemas on 19 June 2026, accompanied by a national Q&A tour with director, Rohan Kanawade, from 16 June.
Set in rural Maharashtra, the film follows Anand, a Mumbai call-centre worker who returns to his ancestral village following the death of his father. There, he reconnects with his childhood friend Balya, and together they navigate grief, identity, family expectations and queer love within the confines of a traditional rural community.
