Te Kahureremoa Tiopira Taumata is a writer, singer, composer, storyteller, taonga pūoro practitioner and visual artist.

The Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tūwharetoa artist has produced musical compositions that have featured across film, theatre, educational resources, art installations, and live performance.

“Ko tāku iti nei, he whāngai i tō tātou hapori, iwi, hapū, tamariki, mokopuna, ki ēnei oro i ahu mai i te taiao, i ngā atua, i ō tātou mātua tīpuna, kia hoki ora mai ēnei taonga ki te kāinga, ki a tātou.”

“My role is simply to serve our community, our tribes, sub-tribes, children, and grandchildren, with sounds from the natural world, the gods, and our ancestors so that these taonga can return home to us.”

Ata Mārie! My debut album 'Acts of Service' is out now. 😭😭😭 I've been holding my breath for this!
I've got heaps of kōrero to share about the album, but that will come later.
@neil_macleod produced and mixed the album, he was my sounding board, idea interrogator, hype-man, bvs king and fellow music nerd. I was so safe and held and free to follow my ideas. It makes me cry to think about how hundies Neil went on this album with me, and I'll always be grateful.
My main manukura pūoro @khali_meari also co wrote some of the songs, played pūoro and was always the first person who I took fresh demos to. She always helps me to edit my ideas and make them better.

There was no financial backing or label behind this project. Its all independent and either people worked for kore moni or trades.

The Cloud Maker’s music celebrates goddesses from each of the five female master musician’s cultures. Channelling ancient tales of fierce battles, shaman dances, journeys to the after-life, and a moth goddess singing the most beautiful song of all time, The Cloud Maker harnesses the power of these archetypal stories to transport listeners across time and space. The all star lineup features the sounds of Te Kahureremoa Taumata (Voice/Taonga Pūoro- Maori Singing Treasures), Aviva Endean (Bass clarinet, Harmonic flutes and electronics) Freya Schack-Arnott (Cello/Nyckelharpa- Nordic fiddle), Maria Moles (Drums) and Sunny Kim (Voice). Woven together through sound and performance, they remember ancient bloodlines and breathe new life into old stories.

Te Kahureremoa Taumata has carved out her own space as an indigenous musician with a unique sound and a suitcase full of traditional Māori instruments.

The Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tūwharetoa artist is known for looping hypnotic harmonies with rhythmic percussion to create a mesmerising live performance that holds themes of healing and empowerment.

Next week, The Cloud Maker begins their tour across Australia — starting in Melbourne and Sydney. Last year, I had the privilege of photographing their album cover and concert poster. Meeting five extraordinary artists — each with their own luminous presence — was a deeply special and inspiring experience. Their music is more than sound. It’s a philosophical journey that recalls forgotten myths and stories, asking where we come from and where we are going.
Every note feels like a cloud connecting distant worlds. Join me next week at the Melbourne Recital Centre to experience this magical performance — where myth breathes again through music.
