One year without her and that number's gonna keep going up the rest of my life. Don't feel like writing many words right now, but I wanted to share this video with everyone. I think mom left this in her phone for her kids to have, but I know she wouldn't want to exclude anyone who thought of her as another mom, or anyone for that matter! Love you, Mom. Miss you lots. An original song by my mom @rintoulsusan last year. We had been talking about how there aren't enough songs about St. Joseph, and how the ones that do exist aren't happy enough, so she wrote this. 😂 I kept singing it wrong, so I asked her to send it in a text herself. Very glad I did ❤️ Enjoy your break from Lent for a day! It's what St. Joseph would want to celebrate his Solemnity!

Note: my mom would still say her daily prayers on St. Joseph Day, just not additional Lenten prayers 😂

Happy First Night of Hanukkah!

For as long as I can remember, I've loved Hanukkah, even coming from a devout Catholic family. I'm not entirely sure how it started, but I loved a Hanukkah musical VHS my mom had gotten. I don't actually know if I loved Hanukkah because of the video, or if mom got it after I was already fascinated with Hanukkah. Every year for my birthday and/or Christmas my mom would get me a Hanukkah themed gift, often from Avon. (As she was an Avon dealer, the holiday demos were usually available to her in October, near my birthday.) She gave me the Hanukkah bear pictured long, long ago. If you squeezed its belly, it used to say "Happy Hanukkah."

I cannot find my menorah; it must be in Duluth with @gza_rose But in looking for one around the house (I'm pretty sure mom had one too), I was reflecting on Mom encouraging us to learn about other traditions from a young age, which greatly shaped who I am today, even to writing a paper on Nostra Aetate, the Church's document on interreligious dialogue, in my Vatican II class in college.

Even though Hanukkah isn't my primary tradition this time of year, it sure is making me miss my mama @rintoulsusan We didn't make latkes tonight because we're out of apple sauce, but I'll sure be thinking about her when I do make some. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate by @telegram_spam

Northern lights tonight! I kind of saw a darkish blur out this direction and had to snap a pic to see what I couldn't see, and it almost looks like an angel! Reminded me it's now the Feast of Guardian Angels, and also my grandpa's death anniversary. I thought of my mom being with him today, and that really brings a sense of peace today, in an otherwise very difficult week. Happy Feast of Guardian Angels! by @telegram_spam

Labor Day sure isn't the same without Mom, and not just because we could only get 7.5" dogs instead of footlongs this year. With mom's pasta crab salad recipe, of course. ❤️

Anyone who talked to my mom in the last year might have heard her say "I want the song Pink Pony Club at my funeral." She said it so many times! But we knew that wouldn't be feasible at a Catholic funeral, so Giselle Rintoul and I thought *maybe* we could play an instrumental version BEFORE the funeral actually started. But we didn't want to hold ourselves to a live music performance the morning of the funeral. But we thought we could play it while lighting one of those lanterns after the funeral in tribute. The lantern didn't go as planned, hence all the laughing. 😂 Seemed even more fitting, knowing my mom, that a potentially somber moment turned kinda hilarious! Props to Giselle for playing flute through all the laughter! Love you, Mama! Keep on dancing 🩷

No damaging fires were started in the making of this video.

One of my favorite things about my parents' house is the diversity of plants in the yard. When I was a kid, I loved picking a big bouquet for my mom, and no matter what, she'd act SO excited, with the biggest happy gasp, and say "for me??? Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" And she'd give us the biggest hug, and a big kiss on the cheek. And she'd make us feel so special putting the flowers in a little cup, and putting them somewhere special, on the table or by her chair. I'm sure sometimes she might have even been a little annoyed that we brought her more flowers, but she always always always acted surprised and happy. (Except for this one time I brought in a tasty flower apparently, and she took it off the stem, sucked it out, and threw it away. 😂 I still wonder what plant that was. She might have called it a honeysuckle, but I have no idea if those actually grow out here. That one was a little soul crushing, lol.)

I haven't picked a bouquet this big in a loooong time. Recently, I picked her one or two flowers, and her instinct was her big, excited gasp. I chuckled and told her she didn't have to pretend to be that excited anymore, and we had a good laugh about it.

Anyway, here's for you, Mama @rintoulsusan Love and miss you very much! I think that's the last prairie rose still blooming in the whole yard by @telegram_spam
