Elise van den Brand (b. 1992, Australia) lives and works in London.

Working in oils, Elise’s works invite us to view the world through the her eyes - where you’re asked to spend time with fragments of a scene from her memory. These ambiguous details are used to explore perception; how we manipulate the way people perceive us and the tension that can bring.

Scale is a key device in Elise’s work. Her paintings are often in miniature scale, demanding either full attention from the viewer or none at all. Occasionally however, a large piece will disrupt that space as a deliberate attempt to reclaim the sense of control given to the viewer over who, or what moment, they’re being asked to give their attention to.

Kaja Stumpf (b. 1987, Norway) lives and works in London.

Her recent work examines memory, self-representation, and the mind-body connection. Through painting, she explores selective memory and cognitive bias as mechanisms of self-preservation, visualising the rumination of possible scenarios emerging between the past and the present.
Utilising staged images and the photographic family archive, she crops the scene and alters the colours to create a sense of delayed familiarity. The paintings serve as a visual investigation into biased recollection. They navigate the fear of the unknown, the impact of outdated beliefs, and the self-destructive behaviours that hinder personal growth.

Fragmented compositions remove context and reflect the tendency to fixate on certain aspects of life while overlooking others. By presenting the body as a vessel of lived experience, she invites multiple interpretations, questioning the conflicting motives behind thoughts and actions.

Meet Katarina Lalic (b. 1998, United Kingdom) who lives and works in London. She’ll be showing her work at our upcoming studio presentation in Hackney later this week.

Katarina’s creative process is characterised by layers of paint creating abstractions of natural sites and landscapes. Whether capturing the contours of mountains or caverns within seashells, Katarina’s paintings convey place and time in nature through dense paint and vigorous brushstrokes.

Drawing from fragmented memories of landscapes and encounters with nature, she reconstructs these impressions into new, discombobulated scenes on linen, through layering, burying, and scraping paint. Natural subjects move fluidly through her paintings. Sometimes they consume the entire surface; at other times, they are reduced to a single brushstroke - the texture of a petal or a fragment of land.

The resulting works remain deliberately ambiguous, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations and, in doing so, imaginatively place themselves within the paintings’ fantastical spaces.

Meet Dean Khalil (b. 1985, United Kingdom) who lives and works in Norwich. He’ll be showing his work in our upcoming studio presentation in Hackney later this week.

Dean’s recent work explores scenes from everyday life and the people around him. Through stark portraiture and compositions of familiar, collected objects, he captures a sense of the personal and the unfamiliar.

These are personal observations, deliberately imperfect. Playing with colour, weight and the uncanny, his work captures objects and spaces through the lens of a memory, somewhat misremembered. The result is a sense of comfortable unease, where the familiar feels just slightly out of place.

Meet Fidji Lapios (b. 1990, Paris) who lives and works in London. She’ll be showing her works in our upcoming studio presentation in Hackney later this week.

Rooted in magical realism, Lapios’ work explores the timelessness of the landscapes we inhabit while investigating the relationship between a place, its memory and our perception of it. Through her work she questions the reality of these landscapes, proposing that places as we know them may be constructed by what we chose to remember. A world between presence and absence, at the edge between the real and the magical.

Whilst drawing upon the traditions of landscape painting, her process is undeniably of today, where she experiments with bright painting mixtures composed of emulsion paints, oils, water, soap, waxes, gessoes, and reflective surfaces. This process paired with luminescent washes and opalescent neon undertones situates the work within a distinctly contemporary visual language.
