Elise van den Brand (b. 1992, Australia) lives and works in London.
Working in oils, Elise’s works invite us to view the world through the her eyes - where you’re asked to spend time with fragments of a scene from her memory. These ambiguous details are used to explore perception; how we manipulate the way people perceive us and the tension that can bring.
Scale is a key device in Elise’s work. Her paintings are often in miniature scale, demanding either full attention from the viewer or none at all. Occasionally however, a large piece will disrupt that space as a deliberate attempt to reclaim the sense of control given to the viewer over who, or what moment, they’re being asked to give their attention to.
Kaja Stumpf (b. 1987, Norway) lives and works in London.
Her recent work examines memory, self-representation, and the mind-body connection. Through painting, she explores selective memory and cognitive bias as mechanisms of self-preservation, visualising the rumination of possible scenarios emerging between the past and the present.
Utilising staged images and the photographic family archive, she crops the scene and alters the colours to create a sense of delayed familiarity. The paintings serve as a visual investigation into biased recollection. They navigate the fear of the unknown, the impact of outdated beliefs, and the self-destructive behaviours that hinder personal growth.
Fragmented compositions remove context and reflect the tendency to fixate on certain aspects of life while overlooking others. By presenting the body as a vessel of lived experience, she invites multiple interpretations, questioning the conflicting motives behind thoughts and actions.
