I just had the amazing opportunity to take a work trip to the #RemixED26 conference in St. Paul MN at the historic High School for Recording Arts, to lead a youth focused Deep Dive I titled “Make You Feel That Way”. For this activity we all wrote a feeling on a sticky note, crumbled them up, picked one out of a hat, and created an original song from scratch, in 4 hours, based off of the feeling we chose. We ended up choosing BLESSED as our topic. I got to work with the amazing youth and educators pictured in slide 1. From left to right Shiloh, Jet, and Kenji from @studioshaka in Hilo Hawaii, Marcus Porter from Madison Wisconsin (my studio facilitator brethren), Zakir my graduate from @studio4LA, Divinity a current student of @hsraminnesota in St Paul, and Eric a music teacher from Minneapolis. Not pictured is my brother Andre @scormusic who joined our activity as well. Everybody did amazing! I truly love my work with @4learningedu and feel grateful to be able to travel and share my expertise with amazing, creative folks like this. We got a huge applause from the conference attendees when we shared our work.

Huge shout out to my mentor @lastnamelipset (Slide 3) for giving me a chance back in 2018 to step in the class room as a studio teacher, and for his continued support in my professional development. You’re the man, Mike! I also got to see some other loved ones as well. Shout out Uncle @kahukua and my younger bro Jordan Lyles. I’m looking forward to next year, and sooner than that, looking forward to bringing this energy back to my classroom @newearthlife / @ybcharter / @studio4la . Our amazing @studio4la / @newearthlife Recording Arts students hit the studio today to collaborate with Ms Mandy’s English class. N’Kiyah and Malaysia did great their first time using Pro Tools! Ariah and Julieta did great being in the booth behind the mic for the first time ever! What a great session! Mandy and Scott are very proud teachers today 🎤 taken in New Earth by @tenacitymusic

I just wanted to take a moment to give some super props to my teaching mentor Ms Mandy. Without her I can confidently say I wouldn’t be the educator I am. We are currently on our 4th year working together, and the amount of teaching game she has put me on is priceless.

She encouraged me to go back to school a few years ago. Now I am almost done earning my credential! I would’ve never thought I’d be in my 40s going back to school, but here I am.

Her natural ability to create fun, relevant activities for our students is something that I admire and try to copy on the regular. Just today she gave me a pep talk and helped me navigate some issues I was dealing with in my classroom. She’s the big sis I never had and the mentor I never had as well. My wife and my parents appreciate her too.

I could go on and on but I won’t. I feel blessed to be able to work and create opportunities for young people, with such a dope mom, educator, and straight up BOSS! She’s the OG to my @4learningedu team out here in Cali. We appreciate you so much Ms Mandy!

Today students in my Recording Arts CTE class learned about Signal Flow and how to properly setup a home recording studio. I demonstrated the proper setup first and then they took turns setting it up on their own. They were able to assist each other until the microphone and the midi keyboard both produced audible signal. Each week we will do this activity until each of my students can set everything up in under 2 minutes. In the audio engineering world, time is money! I’m proud of my guys. Huge shout out and Congratulations to my big brother and collaborator of over 20 yrs @shidog_ for the release of his book “Battle Rap Mastery: A Complete Curriculum for Writing, Performance, & Strategy”.

Shi is in my top 5 lyricists list. I have seen him do incredible things in the studio and on the battle rap scene. I bought this book so that I can incorporate his genius into my teachings.

Back in July I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Hilo, Hawaii and teach the young people there the @4learningedu Track Record competencies.

I was there for 23 days and was able to hand out 21 certificates in total to these amazing 4 young people. Kenji, Kenta, Grace, and Paul. It was a life changing moment for me. A moment that I’ll never forget. Their willingness to let me into their world as a mentor on day 1 was something I’ve never seen before.

In my 8 yrs of doing this work, the first week with new students is “rough around the edges”.

On day 1 we were in the studio locked in. Shout out to the young people of @studioshaka and Connections Charter School. Shout out to Uncle Kris Kua especially. I can’t wait to pull up next July for round two! 🤙
