Recent images of Tender, a third space in Bulleke-bek run by Placement co-director Stephanie Kitingan and partner Nicholas Thorup.

Designed with sound as an anchor, Tender hosts movement and wellbeing practices alongside programs centred around local and international music and arts communities.

Materials and detailing were stripped back in response to extremely tight budget restraints, with much of the labour shared between a crew of friends and trades.

This grassroots project is a long-time passion brought to life, and a testament to the power of collective efforts creating meaningful impact.

Thank you to all that came to our first ever listening party on Saturday, it was nice getting deep and spooky with you on the winter solstice. Special shout out to our hosts @tender_place_ for the most generous hospitality and the best sounding yoga studio we have ever known

Some reflections on the sound at Tender:

When Tender was the seed of an idea, we knew music was always going to be the keystone.

We came across Pitt & Giblin at our local watering hole Waxflower where we’ve been lucky to share our records together on the last Wednesday of every month. Their Superwax system blew us away with its clarity and monolithic appearance, and we heard great things about the knowledgeable people behind the speakers.

The existing space was a minefield of decibels that bounced around the room, with a flat plasterboard ceiling that made reverberation worse. We wanted to achieve a balance between absorption, reflection and diffusion of sound; so after much toil and trouble, we agreed to remove the ceiling and reveal the existing beams - these beams acted like ‘sound aqueducts’, and took a lot of that bounciness out of the space.

The new space is lined with acoustic treatment housed in architecturally designed units that create undulation (also very good for sound). We worked tirelessly with joiner and dear friend Max, as well as Ross and Jack from P&G to ensure that treatment was just right for the best possible listening experience - too much would make the space feel ‘dead’, and too little would feel like a bustling restaurant.

One of the key learnings: while great speakers are important, the room needs to be designed and treated to give them the best chance to sing. Our speakers are paired with a Rane MP2016 rotary mixer on loan to us from Max, and two Technics SL 1200 turntables to complete this listening experience. The results have exceeded our expectations - thank you Ross and Jack for answering our many questions patiently, and for trusting the architectural vision even when the space looked like a mess.

Tender is an acoustically treated space fitted with a pair of Pitt & Giblin Superwax Mini’s, handmade in Tasmania. Each speaker has a 15 inch bass driver and a solid bronze waveguide to provide a consistent, natural sound anywhere in the room. These speakers form the heart of Tender and will be integral to the space for many years to come.

Crown Ruler & Tender Present: GiGi FM Extended Ambient Set

GiGi FM visits the Tender lounge for a very special night of deep ambient on Friday 2nd October.

GiGi FM is a multidisciplinary artist, DJ, dancer, and music producer whose journey began in the underground squat raves of South London. Now based in Berlin, GiGi has grown into a dynamic force in electronic music, captivating audiences at iconic stages and festivals worldwide. Whether blending techno, bass, and breaks or creating immersive ambient soundscapes, GiGi FM’s sets are a masterful exploration of versatility and emotional depth, transporting dancefloors into states of ecstasy.

Deeply influenced by astrology, philosophy, and the cosmos, GiGi FM’s work bridges sound, movement, and metaphysics. Her current trajectory places a strong focus on her own poetic writing, lyrics and vocals, as she continues to craft immersive performances where music, language and ritual intertwine. Ever-evolving, she remains dedicated to creating music and experiences that inspire reflection, movement, and transformation.

mellow is a “soft club” space to care for your body through movement, hosted by Ryan, an embodiment teacher, dance facilitator, and psychotherapist. He believes improvised movement is one of the most life‑nourishing physical practices we can develop. This is not a dance class where you learn steps or technique. Instead, it offers a map for exploring your body through movement and breath, fostering spontaneity, authenticity, and creativity. It’s a space to deeply listen to your body and let how you feel guide how much or how little you move. Imagine the freedom of letting your body shape itself exactly as it wants to, with no prescription for how you need to be.

Unlike most dance events that are loud, extroverted and social, mellow is designed for your inner experience – music and facilitation that invite flow, groove, spaciousness and a soft, dream‑like trance that draws you into yourself.

Guidance is invitational, and together we’ll explore how to:
regulate the body and nervous system through natural, spontaneous movement
find a sense of surrender to music so your body can enter flow
integrate body, emotions, and creative mind
use dance as a source of inquiry and insight
move in a way that feels good

No experience needed, just curiosity and a willingness to move.

7:15–9:15 PM, after Aarti’s Wednesday evening Slow Flow class.

This Sunday, a Monthly Meditation, Circle, & Qigong Class with Kevin Te

This monthly practice is less about achieving something and more about developing an ongoing relationship with your body and your mind.

Each session begins with a short seated meditation, followed by a sharing circle where participants are invited (but never required) to reflect on themes of personal practice, community, health, self-development and the changing rhythms of everyday life. Together we’ll then move through a guided Qigong sequence.

Rather than asking “What can I get from this class?” we explore a different question:
“How can I practice well?”

No previous experience is necessary. All bodies and experience levels are welcome. by @tender____________

This practice has been with me for four years. It has awakened my heart, ignited my creativity, my purpose and connected me to my Self and the divine.

By tapping into ancient wellsprings of knowing, truth and beauty that is innate within each of us, the breath can bring forth meaningful symbols, visions and messages that help us unburden from conditioning and opens us to the possibility of living a life of limitless potential. Flowers for our altar will be provided by high priestesses @xflos__

The practice is safe for all bodies. It has no contraindications, the breath is easy and relaxed. You’ll be lying down for an hour, so bring whatever your body needs to be comfortable on the floor, or let me know if you require support.

If you’re pregnant, neurodivergent, grieving, disabled, chronically ill or just unsure whether this is for you, message me and we’ll talk it through. (Tender is at street level / up one flight of stairs / has an accessible bathroom.) No experience is needed. There’s nothing to get right.

IKSRE presents “in all her forms (sound meditations vol. 2)”

I am so delighted to be hosting the launch of my new album with an rich and immersive afternoon of music and lighting at Brunswick’s premier home of deep listening, @tender_place_

Get comfy on the floor and enjoy a blissed out, 90min live set featuring tunes from the new album alongside selections from across the entire IKSRE back catalogue.

“in all her forms (sound meditations vol. 2)” is a one hour, sound bath album where water functions both as a physical element and a guiding metaphor for transformation. Created as a meditation and composition, the album follows the arc of a traditional sound bath, expanded through field recordings and instrumentation that reflects water’s shifting states - from gas to liquid, liquid to solid, and back again. The album is out on @ctatsupurr on 6 October

Tender presents a Friday evening of music in September:

~ D-Grade + Daura ~

D-Grade
Maria Wang aka D-Grade, is a DJ and organiser based on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia. Inspired by a spectrum of hypnotic, emotive, bossy and beautiful sounds, D-Grade’s sets unfold in patient and intriguing ways.

With a playful yet precise approach, their sets drift between frenetic maximalism and intricate minimalism, between the strange and the satisfyingly-straightforward, making disparate sounds feel unexpectedly fitting. With a partiality for a good bassline and a gaudy guitar riff, their tastes encompass outsider dance, swagged-out downtempo, swirling chuggers, temperamental techno and much beyond.

Daura
Montreal-born deejay DAURA returns to Australia for her second tour. Motivated by an everlasting passion for musical discovery and a quest to find meaning through sound, Daura willingly adapts her selection to each and every setting she has the pleasure to play.

Since 2014, her peculiar sonic palette has slowly taken form through a patient collection of oddities. Dub techno rollers, avant-garde ballads, industrial-tinged remixes, and off-putting minimal-tech are some of the ingredients you may find in one of Daura’s provocative sets. Raw, studied, intricate, atmospheric.
