Introducing one of our contributors to Trauma and the Environment, Issue 2 — Maggie Gourlay @maggiegourl

There is so much behind this powerful work, hand-dyed with plants foraged on site in Gettysburg, PA.

In our NEW Interviews section on tendrilsjournal.com, Maggie talks about what brings her joy, how she manages painful emotions, and Wendell Berry’s writing.

That conversation is live now. Click INTERVIEWS in bio.

Therapy can help you say the scary thing out loud, but your creative practice is how it takes shape. ❤️‍🩹

It belongs at the heart of your day. It’s not a reward for finishing everything else, or something you’ll get to eventually.

Calling your creative practice necessary is a FACT. It’s how you channel what therapy opened and what life keeps delivering.

Send this to someone who needs permission to protect their practice this week.

These four works live together inside Tendrils, Issue 2.

What happens when a painting, a poem, a photograph, and a sculpture live in your hands?

They’re different artists, using different mediums, but they share one space. Trauma and the environment.

This is what it looks like when 54 artists and writers working from lived experience share a journal.

Issue 2 is available now. 👉 Link in bio.

Examples that others survived and made something true is its own form of medicine.

That’s what happens when you encounter a piece of work that shows you someone else went all the way into the same territory and came back with something beautiful.

There’s a loneliness when making art about trauma and not knowing if anyone else has gone there.

Tendrils exists because that loneliness is real.

Send this to someone who needs to know they aren’t alone.

Sometimes it feels like healing isn’t working, because life isn’t getting any easier.

We know from experience that even after therapy you can still feel alone in what you lived through. But that’s not necessarily a failure.

Sometimes more is needed.

You need PROOF that someone else went all the way into it and made something from the experience. ❤️‍🩹

That’s what Tendrils can hold.

Send this to someone who is still looking for that proof.

We want to know what you’re working on right now.

We understand firsthand that what’s on your worktable is never just what’s on your worktable. ❤️‍🩹

It’s how you’re processing what therapy, time, and healing opened. What life keeps delivering and what you haven’t found words for yet. ❤️‍🩹

A poem, a painting, a series that no one has seen.

Tell us in the comments.

Tendrils exists for the person who has done the work and still knows she needs more.

More beauty and complexity.
And more proof that others survived something similar and made something true from it.

That need doesn’t mean the therapy didn’t work. We’re big fans of therapy. It means you know that healing sometimes requires more.

If you know someone in that in-between place, send this their way.

The work inside Tendrils is different.

It’s 54 pieces of lived experience that deserve more than a layout decision.

Every spread in our Trauma and the Environment, Issue 2 required us to ask:
How much space does this piece need to breathe?
What sits next to it, and what does that ask of the reader?
How do you honor the cost of what someone made without overwhelming the person who has to witness it?

That’s the work underneath the work.

If you contributed to Tendrils, thank you. And know that your work was held carefully.

Making is how you handle everything else.

Life has a way of making you forget that. Emails to reply to, to-do lists, chores, and somehow your creative practice is the first thing to be ignored.

But you know it’s not optional. It is how you process what healing opened up and what life keeps delivering.

Save this for when you need a reminder.
