“Rachmaninoff: The Lost Suite” — Official Documentary Teaser

A musical mystery 135 years in the making.

In 1891, seventeen-year-old Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his orchestral Suite in D minor and sent it to Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Through an extraordinary mistake, the manuscript was sent to the wrong recipient and subsequently disappeared.

Just months later, that same year, Tchaikovsky travelled to New York to conduct at the opening celebrations of Carnegie Hall.

More than a century later, in 2001, a piano manuscript of the Suite was rediscovered in the archives of Alexander Siloti. The original orchestral score, however, remains lost.

In an extraordinary twist of history, 135 years later, Rachmaninoff’s long-lost Suite will finally receive its orchestral world premiere at Carnegie Hall on 12 November 2026, in its first-ever complete orchestration by composer and pianist Teodor Doré.

Did Tchaikovsky ever see the score? Did the two composers ever discuss the work? And what happened to the original orchestral manuscript?

Our documentary “Rachmaninoff: The Lost Suite” follows an ongoing historical investigation through rare correspondence, archival research and conversations with musicologists and scholars.

The mystery remains unsolved.

We’re delighted to share the full programme for the Renaissance-21 Festival 2026.

From 22 September to 22 October, the Festival unfolds across London iconic venues, bringing together artists, musicians, curators and thinkers through a programme of live music, contemporary art and public conversations.

At its heart is a conversation between heritage and the present — exploring how cultural memory can become a living source for new work, and what authorship, craftsmanship and human imagination mean in an age increasingly shaped by technology and AI.

Across its music programme, the Festival turns a spotlight on Britain’s rarely heard musical heritage, bringing remarkable and long-overlooked works back to the stage.

One of the things I love most about living in London is its extraordinary cultural diversity. You never quite know who you might meet next — brilliant musicians and artists bringing their sounds, traditions and stories from every corner of the world.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful musician @kadialy Kadialy Kouyate from Senegal who plays the kora, and I’m very excited about what might come out of this encounter.

It feels particularly fitting as I continue developing Portraits of Cities, bringing different musical traditions into conversation and discovering what can emerge when artists from very different backgrounds create together.

I’m already planning some exciting new collaborations with remarkable musicians for the Spring Edition of the Renaissance-21 Festival. More soon — stay tuned.

In the meantime, our Autumn Edition of the Renaissance-21 Festival is just around the corner. This October in London, our musical programme will focus on rare and overlooked works by British composers, bringing remarkable music that deserves to be heard back into performance.

I look forward to seeing many of you there. taken in London, United Kingdom by @teodordore

This autumn, Renaissance-21 launches its inaugural London Festival, bringing together artists, musicians and cultural thinkers to explore how the rediscovery of the past can become a catalyst for new creative work.

Taking place from 22 September to 22 October, and unfolding through Frieze Week, the festival approaches heritage as a living creative force — from the rediscovery of overlooked British music to contemporary art and cultural thought exploring memory, authorship and our relationship with the past.

The programme brings together @chidi.co @dlgsheina @teodordore @noursalehs @abigailmillartodd @sonyapianist @holtagquartet (in assoc. @londoncityphilharmonic) across a multidisciplinary programme of music, art and conversation.

At its heart is a question: what can the past offer a culture searching for new ideas, meaning and direction?

& Markson Pianos PRESENT | MATERIALITY LIVE: NIGHT ONE
Ticket Link in Bio

What does music look like?

On Tuesday 22 September, we bring together three distinct creative voices for the first night of Materiality Live, an intimate collision of live music and painting set amongst the artworks of No Place Art | Materiality, with pianos supplied by Markson Pianos.

Composer and pianist Teodor Doré and pianist and songwriter Jay Verma will perform live as multidisciplinary Artist in Residence Jake Andrew responds to their music in real time.

Through synaesthesia, Jake experiences sound as colour, texture and form. As Teodor and Jay perform, he will translate what he hears and feels directly onto canvas, creating an entirely new painting before the audience.

Teodor will perform works from Les Reflets dorés, moving between Renaissance polyphony, Impressionism and a new contemporary musical language. Jay will perform unreleased material alongside works from his Seasons project, bringing together his distinctive influences across jazz, folk and film music.

Artists:
Teodor Doré | Jay Verma | Jake Andrew
@teodordore | @jay.verma | @jakeandrewart

Two musicians. Two musical worlds. One canvas.

No rehearsed visual outcome. No finished artwork waiting to be revealed.

Just sound becoming colour, music becoming material, and a painting taking shape in the same moment you experience the performance.

Exactly one year ago today, on Malaysia’s Independence Day, I was standing in Kuala Lumpur as fireworks filled the night sky above the Petronas Towers — and something suddenly became clear.

In that moment, the idea for the Renaissance-21 Manifesto was born: the beginning of a cultural movement that would go on to define an extraordinary year of our lives.

What began as an intuition beneath the Kuala Lumpur sky has since grown far beyond what we could have imagined. And now, one year later, we are preparing for the Renaissance-21 Festival in London, followed by the launch of Renaissance-21 in the United States, in New York.

There is something beautifully symbolic about returning to this date. Renaissance-21 may have grown across countries and continents, but Kuala Lumpur will always remain one of its spiritual homes — the city where, beneath a sky illuminated by fireworks, it all began.

What happens when a piano becomes an ecosystem under pressure?

Composer and pianist Teodor Doré placed fragments of debris and waste inside a grand piano and let the instrument speak.

Flow Interrupted is a prepared piano performance exploring water, pollution and belonging. Objects placed inside the piano distort its natural resonance, turning familiar sound into something unstable, evolving, and quietly devastating.

Performed live at the Roca London Gallery — designed by Zaha Hadid Architects this is music that asks hard questions about what we’ve done to the natural world, and where we still belong within it.

Teodor Doré has performed at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House and the Musikverein. His next major work receives its world premiere at Carnegie Hall on 12 November 2026.

Presented by @renaissance.21official in collaboration with CLUSTER with support from @markson.pianos

What happens when music is not simply heard, but seen?

This September, No Place Art introduces Materiality Live, two evenings of live music, painting and creative exchange inside No Place Art | Materiality at The Handbag Factory, Vauxhall.

Across two nights, four extraordinary pianists and composers, Jay Verma, Teodor Doré, Karim Kamar and Camden Stewart, will perform live as multidisciplinary Artist in Residence Jake Andrew responds in real time.

Jake experiences sound through synaesthesia, perceiving music as colour, texture and form. As each performance unfolds, those sensations will be translated directly onto canvas, creating an entirely new artwork before the audience.

This is not music accompanying painting.

It is not painting illustrating music.

It is two creative languages colliding, reacting and evolving together in the same space.

NIGHT ONE | 22 SEPTEMBER
Teodor Doré | Jay Verma | Jake Andrew
@teodordore | @jay.verma | @jakeandrewart

NIGHT TWO | 23 SEPTEMBER
Karim Kamar | Camden Stewart | Jake Andrew
@karim_kamar | @camdenstewarts | @jakeandrewarts

Set amongst the artworks of No Place Art | Materiality, each night offers something that cannot be repeated: new compositions, unreleased music, live experimentation and a painting that exists because of what happened in that room.

Two nights. Four musicians. One artist. Two completely unique works created live.

£30 a seat. 50 seats. Intimate and immersive.

Presented by No Place Art in collaboration with Markson Pianos, Saltu Studio, Daler-Rowney, Renaissance-21 and Off The Page.

In Albania, work is in full swing on the second part of the Portraits of Cities album — an extraordinary creative encounter in Vlora with legendary musician Vendim Kapaj, a master of the traditional Albanian flute @vendimkapaj

It was Vendim whom @ludwiggoransson and Christopher Nolan turned to for the creation of the mystical “Song of the Sirens” for the film The Odyssey. Thanks to a recommendation from good friend of mine, conductor Olsi Qinami @olsiqinami , I came on the Albanian coast and recorded deeply evocative parts for two traditional flutes, bringing unexpected and vivid new colors to the upcoming album.
