WE GOT A NEW PARK… but it’s still not open? 🫠

It takes more than land to open a park. TRUST, if it were that simple we’d all be frolicking in the park together.

But before any park opens, we have to learn the land and make sure we can protect it properly for future generations. This means a lot of planning, public feedback, surveys, and plenty of research.

A few months back we acquired Silver Lake State Park, becoming the second largest park in our system. Now @texasparkswildlife biologist are documenting fish species and ensuring the water is safe for recreation.

You can’t go to the Big Bend region without a stop at @bigbendnps . Home to dramatic canyons, hot springs, and 118 miles of the Rio Grande. There are ample opportunities to canoe, raft, or go fishing. If you’re going to fish in the park, you’ll need a free NPS permit. This is certainly the busiest spot in Big Bend so plan ahead. #bigbend #riogrande #springbreak #westtexas taken in Big Bend National Park by @texasriversandstreams

This stop isn’t technically a park, but it’s too gorgeous not to mention when you’re in the Big Bend area, it’s Black Gap Wildlife Management Area. The WMA is downstream from Big Bend National Park and borders 25 miles of the Rio Grande that is designated as Wild and Scenic by the National Park Service. The water here is spring-fed and has a beautiful blue-green color. If you want to escape the crowds to do some fishing in a wilderness setting, this one’s for you. Purchase an annual Limited Public Use permit for $12 to fish or camp at our WMAs. #blackgap #westtexas #bigbend #springbreak #riogrande taken in Black Gap Wildlife Management Area by @texasriversandstreams

Next, we head west to @bigbendranchsp on our Spring Break road trip. The park borders beautiful, remote sections of the Rio Grande and is home to abundant fish, wildlife, and spectacular views. The park offers multiple access points to the river for fishing, rafting, canoeing, and exploring and is often less crowded than the nearby national park. #bigbend #westtexas #springbreak #riogrande taken in Big Bend Ranch State Park by @texasriversandstreams

Spring Break is here and we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite state parks with river access over the next week. First up is @villagecreekstatepark northwest of Beaumont. The park is home to Village Creek, Village Slough, and Sandy Slough. Village Creek is a tannin-stained, clear East Texas stream with beautiful sand bars. The park serves as a take out point for the Village Creek Paddling Trail, offers bank fishing opportunities, and loans out fishing tackle. The waterbodies in the park support fish, mussels, crayfish, and more. #villagecreek #villagecreekstatepark #springbreak #txstateparks #easttexas taken in Village Creek State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife by @texasriversandstreams
