We're so happy to be speaking at the UIA 2026 World Congress of Architects in Barcelona this July!

We'll be part of Unremarked Landscapes - a session within the Becoming Attuned programme - sharing work from the Documenting Difference project alongside Francisco Felipo Muñoz, Jose Lorenzo Belandres and Nipun Prabhakar, hosted by Natalia Vera (O-SH Studio) and Sete Álvarez Barrena.

PRETEND IT’S A CITY
Text Catalogue x University of Malta

Pretend it’s a City is part of an ongoing collaboration with the University of Malta and supports an investigation into the current state of dense dwelling typologies in Malta. The workshop emphasises the development of design project proposals using theoretical and critical processes on the observed local built landscape. The workshop is shaped by a series of collaborative exercises and discussions with BSc 2nd Year students from the Faculty for the Built Environment. This takes place annually over 4 weeks through a series of presentations, roundtables and studio sessions involving students, tutors and guest speakers. Students are guided through field work, documentation and design tasks which serve as the basis for critical and theoretical explorations, eventually culminating in a collective project. The workshop is supported by Prof. Alex Torpiano, Dean of the Faculty for the Built Environment and Dr. Irina Miodragovic Vella, Head of Department of Architecture and Urban Design and Perit Alex Spiteri, Architect and class coordinator.

More than a year ago @andrea_zerafa and ourselves stepped into one of the last standing bakeries in the vicinity of Valletta's Biccerija area. Still jittery from having won our first ever open call entry, a conversation unfolded. Many revisits later, one such exchange saw a set of numbered metal tags strung onto a large ring brought out onto a table.

This week we finally get to begin unpacking a year of research and the countless encountered narratives which were moulded into an artistic concept to ultimately give us Ix-Xuwa.

Ix-Xuwa is a part of @fuse_mlt , a project created and curated by @elysetonna and produced by @vcamalta as part of the Agency’s Cultural Programme.

Informed by the community’s stories of the local bakeries and ritualistic Sunday roast, Ix-Xuwa adopts as its object of repetition the seemingly insignificant metal tags which were used by bakers to identify the owners of different roasting dishes. The tags, once symbolic of the transaction between community and bakery, here serve as a moment of fusion between the past, present and future of the Biccerija territory.

Thank you to everyone that supported the project, especially to our volunteers who helped us painstakingly imprint and stitch together 5,000 metal tags by hand, the locals who so openly shared their stories and their delight at recognising the tags replicated for this piece, Elyse who was our shining light through thick and thin and all the fuse production team.

Ix-Xuwa temporarily finds its home in Bull Street, Valletta alongside other artworks from the amazing fuse team around the @valletta_design_cluster which are open to the public for the coming months.

A reel of pages from Documenting Difference - a mini compilation marking the project’s selection for the UIA 2026 World Congress of Architects, presented this July in Barcelona as part of Unremarked Landscapes, within the Congress’s Becoming Attuned research line.

Documenting Difference is a living archive of overlooked buildings across Malta and Gozo, initiated by @textcatalogue through collaborative workshops with University of Malta architecture students since 2020.

Photographs of documented sites were first assembled into an installation at Ħaġra Festival in Valletta (2025), and that same body of work now forms the ground from which Reuse Collective grows - the archive as something to be excavated, taken apart, and put back together differently.

Two questions now drive the work forward: how can design practice imagine new futures for the local built environment that grow out of this documented vernacular, rather than wiping the slate clean? And how might circularity become a spatial and cultural ethic, alongside a technical process?

This document and its accompanying postcard series were made possible with the support of Arts Council Malta, and brought together by Reuse Collective members @drm.ndrw @e.fles @gabrielatt00 @matthewcachiafearne @max_darmanin @danielformosa03 @its_danie101. Hello Reuse Collective!

Reuse Collective is an open, evolving platform exploring a culture of reuse in Malta and beyond. Founded by @textcatalogue in 2025, it brings together members @gabrielatt00 @its_danie101 @danielformosa03 @matthewcachiafearne + @max_darmanin since 2025, and additionally @arjawan_hrg and @luca.bb_ since 2026.

We’re excited to be debuting our first installation, KABANA, at Kampusajf 2026: Playgrounds for Emergence, between 6th and 8th August and to be participating in the festival programme with a gathering and workshop on 7th August:

From a post-grad daydream to the UIA World Congress of Architects stage, Documenting Difference is a long-term research project by Text Catalogue that looks closely at the overlooked buildings of our islands - not for their architectural style or age, but for what they do: front gardens, staircases, thresholds, projections and rooftops that quietly make room for a richer, less scripted kind of everyday life.

It has grown out of years of valued collaborations and opportunities - workshops with architecture students at UoM’s Faculty for the Built Environment, the @hagra.info Architectural Festival for the Mediterranean Region (Valletta, 2025), the @art_omi Architecture residency (upstate New York, 2026), and most recently the @uia2026bcn World Congress of Architects (Barcelona, 2026) - becoming a living archive and a set of new initiatives building towards a culture of reuse in Malta through new collaborations.

At Kixott we’ll share the work, the archive and what’s growing from it, inviting a broader discussion.

On the night, a limited run of the Documenting Difference mini-book and postcard series will be available to take home, free of charge. We loved working on these with our wonderful collaborators @its_danie101 @danielformosa03 @gabrielatt00 @matthewcachiafearne @max_darmanin . Together with @arjawan_hrg and @luca.bb_ they are helping shape the new initiatives growing from the project.

What an honour to share our work at the UIA World Congress of Architects in Barcelona @uia2026bcn . Thank you to everyone who joined us at our stage (whilst Smiljan Radić and Atelier Bow-Wow presented next door!) and to the curators for creating an encouraging platform for emerging practices alongside established ones.

It is so exciting and meaningful to represent our tiny island of Malta amid such a broad spectrum of international voices, all asking what it means to practise architecture in a time of transition.

Documenting Difference is our longest ongoing research enquiry and it continues to shape so many wonderful projects, collaborations and exchanges. Grateful for the road so far, and excited for what’s next.

Our time at Spreepark Art Space in Berlin placed us somewhere architects rarely find themselves - outside the pursuit of the finished work. The process of making buildings and shaping spaces is often concerned with chasing an end, a finish line. Spreepark Art Space invited architects and architecture-connected practitioners into the art space in a dual way - placed on a construction site mid-transformation, valued not for accelerating the finished space but for watching it change, reacting to it, and creating within that in-between.

There is so much to learn by stepping outside your field and reflecting on your practice from a different vantage point. We owe so many of the lessons currently shaping our work to Berlin - to the people who shaped our time there, to the opportunity to work openly, collaborate, and be valued as interdisciplinary practitioners.

Here we are sharing some moments from the journey - from our three month residency to putting on an international exhibition - alongside our wonderful collaborators Fay and Daphne from the Memoria Collective, and the other inspiring residency artists who contributed to Transient Landscapes. Memoria’s immersive installation Secret Exhibition of the Unfinished remains on show alongside their work until 14th June.
