I Can See the Sun in Late December

I knew Roberta Flack’s beautiful version first, then found this old live performance of Stevie on YouTube that I’ve gone back to again and again.

So hearing Stevie’s own recording finally released yesterday was such a treat.

And the lyrics…Hopeful, searching, deeply human. He always had this way of writing about life that could feel intimate and enormous at the same time … so Stevie. ❤️

Liner notes are the best … You’d spot a name, wonder who they were, then end up three records deep somewhere else.

Songs in the Key of Life … How do you capture life in an album?

Across two records, Stevie somehow touches love, heartbreak, childhood, faith, race, poverty, joy, family, ambition, injustice … the beauty of being alive and the weight of it too.

And he was only 26 years old.

That might be the part that still blows my mind. To understand humanity with that much depth, and then turn it into music that still feels this alive 50 years later.

The further Coltrane went, the less the old structures seemed to matter.

After A Love Supreme, the music opened up — looser harmony, expanded rhythm, collective improvisation, a deeper spiritual search.

Ascension. Meditations. Kulu Sé Mama. Interstellar Space.

And anyone who knows my jazz journey knows I’m still finding my way through free jazz. I don’t always understand it on first listen — or the fifth. This music takes time. Honestly, it may take me the rest of my life. 😂

But maybe that’s part of the point.

She fell for the music before she fell for the man. ❤️

Alice first heard John Coltrane play before they ever met. When they finally crossed paths at Birdland in 1963, she would later describe talking to him as feeling like reconnecting with an old friend.

What I love about their story is how much Alice genuinely admired John. Not just as her husband, but as her best friend and teacher.

And then there are these photos… the way they looked at each other. 🥹
