PARKED CAR SCENE

In this scene, Brownie Mary and Dennis were delivering brownies to private households. As you can see, extras walking past, skating, doing everyday things.

What’s an extra?
Extras are people that lowkey act in the background. Background actors. In this case, they had to act like in the 80s. Dress code, no phones, etc.

CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL HEISLER

Christopher is a german Director of Photography based in Lisbon, Portugal, who runs his own production company called CAMCAT. Chris specializes in commercial work, documentaries, interviews and music videos.

He has worked as 1st DP on Volkswagen commercials, campaigns for HORIZN Studios and a variety of fashion brands, as well as a Bloomberg Originals documentary for which he was hired by award-winning producer Matt Goldman.

Combining colour grading and storytelling, he creates high-end cinematic visuals for films and videos of small and large brands.

His short film THE SOUTH BANK, which he wrote and directed, has been selected by six international film festivals and named a finalist.

For BROWNIE MARY, he is our DoP, co-director, colorist and gaffer.

Canadian actor, screenwriter, and producer Frankie Rooney has worked in film for more than 30 years, building a career both in front of and behind the camera. Based in Lisbon and trained at The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in Hollywood, she is an active supporter of Portugal’s growing film industry.

Frankie stars as Mary Jane Rathbun in Brownie Mary, portraying the activist whose compassion left a lasting impact on countless lives.

THE PARK SCENE

A little behind-the-scenes moment: Dennis and Brownie Mary chatting and smoking on a park bench.

This scene helped capture the feeling of 1980s San Francisco, with Lisbon’s Ponte 25 de Abril bridge standing in for the city’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

The first slide features a colour-graded screenshot from the edited movie.

The Ponte 25 de Abril in Lisbon and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco were both designed by the same engineering firm (American Bridge Company).

Mary Jane Rathbun a.k.a Brownie Mary was a true pioneer, far ahead of her time.
Ironically, her first name, „Mary Jane,“ later became a popular slang term for marijuana – as if she was destined to become one of the movement’s most iconic advocates.

Thank you everyone. Receiving birthday wishes from a lifetime of friends - from high school to Lisbon. Friends, cousins, former coworkers, students, my tribes members from San Francisco, Guerneville, Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, Joburg, London, Lisbon and yes Papua Niugini and Tanzania. Friends from Australia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Brazil, Mexico, Denmark, Italy, Spain, France and, of course, Portugal. When I turned 30, I felt that I had lived a fuller life than most people twice my age. And I had. I have travelled through countries, cultures, societies, groups of friends, families. Each experience and each “teacher”, whether a fellow traveller, a villager, a celebrity, an academic, a friend, continued to feed mu insatiable curiousity about this world we temporarily inhabit. Eaxh friend earned. Each friend lost. Each challenge. Each love. Each tragedy. Each disappointment. Each heartbreak. Each accomplishment. Each struggle. Each career. Each story told. Each lonely moment of having been there, and not having anyone to share with. Each. Each. Each. Still I wish I could have as many days in the future as I have had in the past. Because I am not done. I will keep running, loving, celebrating, curiocicizing, learning until I can’t anymore. Even the shittiness of the current times tines provides fertilizer for a future. So time for another rollercoaster ride around the sun. Thanks for all loving me and being my friend. Fir making me who I am. And thank you Mikie @mgilbeaux for being my bestie ever since we were twinks.
