ISSUE 002: TOMKING🤴🏾

The invitations are out, the bow ties are on, and the dance floor is ours.

This issue takes us back to prom night: satin suits, slow dances, stolen glances, and the anticipation of being crowned. A celebration of showing up as yourself, holding your date a little closer, and making memories worthy of the yearbook.

No tricks, just 6 treats.
Happy Tomoween 💐

ISSUE 001: TRY OUTS 📢

Welcome to TomGirl Magazine.

A Tomgirl isn’t about choosing between masculinity or femininity, it’s about having the confidence to embody both.

This issue marks the beginning of our first season. TRY OUTS is a celebration of individuality, ambition, and the players bold enough to take the field exactly as they are.

The season starts now. 🏆

I chose prom for Issue 002 because everyone deserves that moment to get dressed up, walk in with someone they’re proud to stand beside, and feel celebrated for being themselves.

For some of us, prom didn’t come with the freedom to wear what we wanted or bring who we wanted. This shoot was a chance to reimagine that experience on our own terms with a little drama, romance, and Tomgirl personality.

From the couples to the crowns, I wanted to show Black gay boys being admired, chosen, and worthy of the spotlight.

Meet your TomGirls

Everybody wants the crown, but what makes a TOMKING? 👑🎤 We asked the Tomgirls—and they had a few things to say.

Tell us in the comments: what does being a TOMKING mean to you? ✨ by @tgvarsity

Jalen & Chris: 💌

The popular couple everyone swears broke up last week. Neither confirmed it, but they arrived together to protect their image. “Smile. They’re watching,” Chris says. Everyone in the room could feel the tension through the photos. “Remember you’re only known because of me” ,rebuttals Jalen.

Moe & Blu: 👑

Blu brought Moe to prom to make his ex jealous. Moe agreed because he’d been waiting on his chance anyway. The plan worked a little too well. Blu was announced TomKing but couldn’t be found anywhere.

15 minutes later, they come out the bathroom with bow ties crooked and jackets off. What could possibly have happened? They hurry and fix their clothes to take a picture and crown Blu. “Same time tomorrow?” Whispers Moe.

James & Ke: 💐

They both showed up solo, judged everybody’s dates, then looked at each other like… “We could do better.” One “why not?” later, they’re posing like they’ve been together all semester. Now everybody wants a backstory they haven’t made up yet.

For TOMGIRL’s first shoot, my creative direction was about creating a visual introduction to the world I wanted TOMGIRL to represent. I chose a sports-inspired “Try Outs” concept because sports are traditionally associated with masculinity, and I wanted to bring TOMGIRL’s feminine energy into that space without taking away from either side.

Everything from the styling and poses to the overall attitude was meant to feel confident, playful, competitive, and expressive. I wanted each Tomgirl to feel like their own character while still looking like part of one team.

More than anything, “Try Outs” was my way of establishing the foundation of TOMGIRL. It wasn’t just our first shoot — it was the first look at the world I’m building. 🏆
