I miss my friends! @jieru2967 @monathe_vampyre @4hundredrabbits 400 Rabbits Yesterday the world ended, and I missed your leg warmers and fancy jumpers. I missed the birthday cake I couldn't eat, sun-warmed wine, crisp sandwiches, and veg patties. I missed your dry face, ginger beer, and electric blue hair, the potato salad and juice, the library books and boots. As Time fooled us—pushing cities apart, turning scared girls into silly women—we stood hand in hand, separated by eons on fractured pavements, waiting for the waves to still and earth to dissolve; knowing that even beyond the end's end, St Martins girls would never submit to Time's revolving trick. What do you carry forward, and what must be left behind? What parts of yourself have you had to bury in order to live? This poem began with a small act of rebellion: wearing dangly earrings for the first time to go see Macbeth. But it became something else. A meditation on religious control, inherited shame, estrangement, and the long shadow of colonial belief systems. Dangly Earrings is a poem about growing beyond the selves we were taught to be. There is grief in transformation. There is violence in self-realisation. There is ritual in remembering. I performaned my poem "if God or Devil" the other night at the Dreaming thanks to @the_new_mersey_poets I haven't written about racism for years because its all been too heavy. I love Liverpool but it's not always easy to be here. But I was raised by 2 narcissistic autistic people and that means 2 things 1. Nothing can truly hurt me 2. I'm delusional. When racists take time out of their lives to provoke me or get upset at my existence I always think "Wow in their minds I Am mighty and terrifying". In their minds I Am feared and wondered after. To them I Am powerful and sacred. And maybe I am powerful. And maybe I am God🤷🏾‍♀️ Exodus 20:3 KJV Thou shalt have no other gods before me. AM1974,02.2948 (a descendant's burden) I wrote this about an encounter with ancestor in a museums store. A Taino buried in Jamaica 1000s of years ago. He was a child. Lying facing east with one hand on his heart and one between bent legs holding a series of rocks and crystals. He was found by a coloniser in the 1970s and taken to the UK. Put in a box. Tagged and logged. Seeing him felt like a relief. At long last I could hold him in my arms and tell him thank you. Then the grief set in. How far away he is from home. How lonely he must be in that crate, on that self. How far he'd come. And I realised that neither of us were really supposed to be here. But we are.
