Yesterday was my sequel’s book release and my fourth published novel; I’ve been writing for nine years and published for seven, and have never felt so supported.

I don’t know what to say other than thank you so much for sharing your time, wisdom, and works with me. I don’t watch very many—if any—reality shows about love, so reading this felt fresh, interesting, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before! Tbh, books like this scratch the part of my brain that wants to know all the side characters’ business. 🤣

📖BOOK TOUR STOP📖

✨ Everything Comes Back to You by Jackie Khalilieh ✨

This is such a gorgeous book, inside and out! It does handle some difficult topics, such as teenage pregnancy, cultural expectations, purity culture, emotional abuse by parents, and much, much more. And while there was a lot going on in terms of the topics covered, everything was handled with great care and felt essential to the plot, so it didn’t feel exploitative or “too much” at all. I am such a huge fan of this new class of YA contemporary writers who dare to write about real, raw topics in a way that young adult readers can easily digest and identify with.

Lennon is at the center of this story, a Palestinian Canadian teenager who begins high school and develops an attraction to boys—and a desire to explore that development—at the same time her older sister, also a teen, announces that she’s pregnant. Lennon navigates her coming of age story frequently masking as an autistic person whose neurodivergence colors her worldview. However, as someone who is neurotypical, I appreciated how masking was presented here; paralleled with cultural expectations and purity culture, because a lot of people of color—especially those with religious or otherwise conservative upbringings—participate in a degree of masking around family that is often very difficult to unlearn.

I loved the writing, I loved the boldness of Khalilieh to write a story like this, I loved Lennon, and I loved her growth.

It has been forever and a day since I posted to my feed, and it’s been even longer since I sat down and created a physical TBR for the month. Since I only read one (1!!!!) book in June, I am committing myself to reading as many books as I can in July! Whatever I can squeeze in outside of this stack will be eARCs and ALCs.

You did your big one, Ms Allen! The Curve series is a TRUE 5 star series, and Big Girl Blitz is my new favorite. Lamar was a M A N, honey! He was so caring, so kind, so gentle, so loving, so solid, and a true help instead of a headache. I adored the way he held Jazmyn up when she didn’t feel strong enough to shoulder her load and how he loved her out loud. Jazmyn was smart, funny, soft, loving, and supportive, and such a wonderful FMC to journey with. The storyline between her and her Aunt Addison was my favorite—I was recently talking with a friend about how we often see the trope of the childless auntie who spoils her nieces and nephews with love and material things, but we don’t often see how the childless auntie giving her all to those kids impacts them. That is on front display here—Addison was a mother of sorts to Jazmyn, and it informed the way she saw the world and engaged with the world.

As with the other FMCs in this series, Jazmyn is plus-sized, and growing up in a small town made Jazmyn the subject of ridicule and cruelty that she couldn’t easily shake. She’s faced with this trauma when she returns home to care for Aunt Addison in her final days, but learns to feel completely settled in who she is on multiple levels. It was so nice to see Aaliyah and Ahmad, Nina and Russ again—my babies! Jazmyn and Lamar fit in with the other couples really well!

One of the things I loved the most was Lamar’s career trajectory. I think going from practice squad to starting roster player is somewhat common in real life, but it’s a less-shown aspect of professional football sports romance, so it was really nice to see that here. And the way social media was incorporated worked really well.

Overall, this was a fantastic ending to a phenomenal series. Black Love, you will always be famous!
