So many thoughts about this 25th anniversary of 9/11. Then, as now, I think what stands out most to me is that it showed us the absolute worst of humanity and the absolute best. I cried this morning while rewatching news footage of the attacks for the first time in a very long time. But I probably shed just as many tears rewatching the documentary about the massive boatlift that helped people escape Lower Manhattan. And the one about our amazing Canadian friends in Gander, Newfoundland who selflessly pulled together to help thousands of strangers whose airplanes were suddenly diverted there by the closure of U.S. airspace.

I lived in Richmond, Virginia at the time and the attack on the Pentagon just 100 miles away made 9/11 feel that much closer to home. But I’ve been a New Yorker for 10 years now and the emotion of that day feels especially strong every time I’m in Lower Manhattan. Never forget.
